Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CADY, OF STAFFORDVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICKERS FoP. Looms.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, J oHN CADY, of Staffordville, county of 'lolland, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttle Drivers or Pickers 5 and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following speciication and drawings, and to enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, I will proceed to describe its construction by referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like partsin each ot' the figures.
This improvement relates to a certain device designed to take the place of common pickers, usually made of bualo-hide, for impelling the shuttle in looms for weaving fabrics, the nature of which Will be fully understood from the accompanying specification and drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of the :improvement attached to the upper end or section of the picker-staff, which plays through openings in the bottom of the shuttle-box. Fig. 2 is atop view of the clamp portion of the device which holds it to the sta. Fig. 3 is a sectional face view cut through the line a, showing the ribs which hold the strips of leather (or other elastic material) in place, or to prevent a side- Wise motion thereof. i
A is the upper end or section of a pickerstaff, the lower end of which is secured on each side of a loom-lathe, and is operated much in the same way of operating the whiplever, the upper end of which plays through openings in the bottom ofthe shuttle box. B is a metallic clasp for holding the leathers (or other elastic substance) to receive the concussion ofthe shuttle, and to impe] it forward in` its return motion. vo are ribs, which serve to hold the leathers, tc., in place. d are projecting points to hold the clasp from moving up or down on the staff. (Shown by dotted lines in Fig. l.) Cis a metallic clamp, theforked ends e of which are of such shape as to hook into the recess portion j' of the clasp B, and will be held in their proper position by the thickness of the staff A. h is a set-screw arranged in the outer end of the clamp C, having a ratchet-pad, i, secured on the inner end thereof. The object of this pad t is to prevent a backward motion ofthe screw h when the pickers are secured to the staff thereof. These leathers may be quickly and easily taken out, and replaced when desirable, the stock for which may be supplied from waste leather. By this improvement a more useful and durable article is produced, and also one more easily removed and replaced and adjusted.
I believe I have shown the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement so as to enable a person skilled in the art to make and use the same.
What l claim, therefore, and desire.. to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe clasp B, clamp C, and leathers D, in combination with the staff A, for the purpose as described.
JoEN oADY.
