Abstract

A TOILET UNIT ADAPTED FOR INSTALLATION IN A CABINET OR THE LIKE THAT IS FITTABLE OVER AND SUPPORTED BY AN EXISTING FLOOR MOUNTED CLOSET BOWL WHEREIN THE TOILET UNIT ADAPTED COMPRISES AN INTEGRAL INCURVATURE SINK WITH A HINGED TOILET SEAT AND TOILET SEAT COVER MOUNTED IN THE INCURVATURE SINK. THE SEAT AND COVER SWING DOWNWARDLY IN FLUSH RELATIVE

WITH SAID INCURVATURE SINK. THE INCURVATURE SINK FACILITATES SECURING SAID TOILET UNIT ADAPTED TO THE CLOSET BOWL AND EXISTING PLUMBING. THE TOILET UNIT ADAPTER, BEING SO SUPPORTED, CAN BE EASILY REMOVED FROM A CLOSET BOWL FOR MAINTENANCE AND THE LIKE.

SPRINGER BY U ATTORNEY United States Patent Oifice 3,588,927 Patented June 29, 1971 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A toilet unit adapter for installation in a cabinet or the like that is fittable over and supported by an existing floor mounted closet bowl wherein the toilet unit adapter comprises an integral incurvature sink with a hinged toilet seat and toilet seat cover mounted in the incurvature sink. The seat and cover swing downwardly in flush relative with said incurvature sink. The incurvature sink facilitates securing said toilet unit adapter to the closet bowl and existing plumbing. The toilet unit adapter, being so supported, can be easily removed from a closet bowl for maintenance and the like.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Prior art toilet units are shown, for example, in Clarence A. Springer Pats. Nos. 3,149,346; 3,266,060; and 3,378,855. In the above patents, a toilet unit is disclosed within a cabinet structure. However, certain improvements have been necessitated in the development of toilet units for cabinet type installation. Ease of installation needed to be facilitated, and providing structure for aiding overall cleanliness of the toilet unit was considered desirable.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Not only does cabinet installation of a toilet unit improve the appearance of a bathroom, but a reduction in noise level from flushing or the like is obtained. Further, with an incurvature sink, the cleanliness of the toilet unit is easier to maintain. Also, ease of installation is provided by an incurvature sink having structure integral therewith for supporting the toilet unit adapter on an existing closet bowl.

It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a toilet unit adapter with an improved structural arrangement to facilitate support of said adapter on a closet bowl or the like.

It is another object of the invention to provide a toilet unit adapter having an incurvature sink for mounting on a closet bowl.

It is still another object of the invention to provide an integral adapter of an incurvature portion and rim means to facilitate mounting the toilet unit adapter on an existing toilet bowl or the like.

It is yet another object of the invention to provide a toilet unit adapter that is improved in appearance and utility.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Illustrated in FIG. 1 is a water closet embodying the present invention, which comprises a closet bowl cabinet 11. Formed in a counter and in a front wall 23 of the cabinet 11 is an opening 26, which provides access to a closet bowl 12 mounted on the floor interiorly of the cabinet 11. It is through the opening 26 that an incurvature counter sink can be inserted so that a depending portion or lip 27 (FIG. 3) integral with the sink 30 can rest within the rim 12a of the bowl 12, and is thus supported thereby. It is within the contemplation of the present invention to add a disc so that the lip 27 can rest in flush relation on the rim 12a. The incurvature sink 30 includes a substantially rectangular bottom wall 30a having an opening that is registerable with the opening 12b of the closet bowl 12. The depending portion 27 of the sink 30 is provided with an opening 27a having an inner periphery in substantial alignment with the periphery of the opening 35, and the depending portion 27 is also provided with a contoured surface 271) for abutting and substantially matching the rim 12a of the closet bowl 12. Thus, the incurvature sink 30 is supported on the closet bowl 12 in such manner that a sealing type engagement exists between the rim 12a and the surface 27b of the depending portion 27.

30b, 30c and 30d, with filleted portions at the intersections of the bottom wall and the sides. In addition, a raised portion 30f is integral with the bottom wall 30a along the front thereof. Thus, in effect, the sides and the raised portion form a partial enclosure for the bottom wall. The opening 35 in the bottom wall 30a is in alignment with the opening 27a of the depending portion 27. The bottom wall 30a may be sloped slightly toward the central opening 35 to facilitate drainage into the central opening. The filleted portions 40 facilitate cleaning and cleanliness of the incurvature sink 30. The raised portion 30 reduces the spillage of liquid over the front edge of the bottom wall 30a.

A recess (FIG. 4) is provided along the front of the sink 30* so that the front wall 23 is fitted therein so that liquids are prevented from entering the cabinet.

30b, 30d is a seat 31. Formed in the seat 31 is a central opening 31a, which is in register with the opening 35 of the incurvature sink 30 when the seat 31 is in a horizontal position. Thus, the seat 31 is pivotally mounted on a member 31b (FIG. 2) and may readily be raised and lowered relative to the sink 30, when in the lowered or horizontal position, the seat 31 a buts against the raised portion 30) in sealing engagement.

A seat cover 32 is also pivotally attached to the sink 30 adjacent to and above the pivotal attachment of the seat 31. The seat cover 32 is provided with a depending flange 32a which serves to conceal the forward portions of the incurvature sink and the seat 31, when the seat cover 32 is in a horizontal position (FIG. 5 A radius filleted portion 320 at the intersection of the flange and the cover 32 is engageable with the rounded contour of the forward seat portion, to thereby maintain the cover 32 in a substantially flush condition with the counter 25 when the seat cover 32 is in a closed, horizontal position.

Thus, a toilet unit has been described that can easily be supported by a closet bowl or the like. With the toilet unit supported on the closet bowl, it is conpatible with a cabinet or the like constructed around the bowl. The incurvature sink, hereinabove, described, offers a support for a pivotally attached seat and a seat cover. The toilet unit adapter is truly a unit in that the sink, depending portion, seat and seat cover are integral and as such is easily installed as a unit.

It is to be recognized that the toilet unit adapter need not make direct contact with the toilet bowl, but can be supported indirectly therefrom. The toilet unit adapter of the present invention may be employed with other fixtures, appliances and bowls other than a toilet bowl.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the invention together with its many advantages will be readily apparent. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A toilet unit adapter comprising an incurvature sink, said incurvature sink being formed with an opening in a bottom Wall thereof, said incurvature sink also having a depending portion extending from the periphery of said opening for fitting on the rim of a bowl to support said incurvature sink, and a seat pivotally attached within said 4 incurvature sink for horizontal positioning Within said incurvature sink.

2. A toilet unit adapter as claimed in claim 1 and cord prising a seat cover pi-votally attached within said incurvature sink for horizontal positioning within said sink and wherein said seat cover is substantially flush with said incurvature sink.

3. A toilet unit adapter claimed in claim 1 wherein said incurvature sink is provided with a raised frontal portion for abutting the frontal portion of said seat when said seat is in a horizontal position.

4. A toilet unit adapter as claimed in claim 1 wherein said incunvature sink is provided with radius filleted por tions disposed adjacent to the edges of said seat when said seat is in a horizontal position.

5. A toilet unit adapter as claimed in claim 2 wherein a rear edge of said seat is disposed adjacent to a rear edge of said seat cover when said seat cover is in a raised position.

6. A toilet unit adapter as claimed in claim 2 wherein the bottom wall of said incurvature sink is provided with raised portions on the periphery thereof to contain liquids from spilling from said incurvature sink.

7. A toilet unit adapter as claimed in claim 1 wherein said incurvature sink is provided with a recessed portion along a frontal portion thereof to receive a cabinet panel or the like.
