Beit known that I, LEAcH KING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteuings for Door- Mats, of which the following is such a full, clear, concise, and exact description as Will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.

The object of my invention is to construct a convenient and suitable fastening for doormats and for such other purposes as it may be adapted, which will securely hold such mats or other articles, while at the same time permitting the release of the saine under conditions controlled by the owner thereof.

To this end myinvention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts adapted to work in conjunction with each other, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a door and its frame-work to Which my improved fastening is applied, and showing also the outlines of the mat sccured thereto by a chain, the door being partly open. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the stationary slotted piece C, taken on the line fr x of Fig. 3, which is a plan view of the same. Fig. I is a plan view of a modified form of the stationary slotted piece, While Fig. 5 is a ver tical section thereof taken on the line y y of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a side view of one form of the anchor D, of which Fig. 7 is the plan View. Fig. 8 is a side view of a modified form of such anchor, and Fig. 9 is the plan view thereof. Fig. 10 is a side view of one forni of fastening E, made to pass through the mat and connect with a chain or other attachment; and Fig. Il is the plan View ofthe same fastening. Figs. l2 and I3 are respectively top and side views of a staple to pass through the matin order to receive the vchain when such form is desired, while Fig. I4 is a top View of the same staple when the prongs thereof are turned back in order to clinch it.

In the drawings the same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts Whenever repeated.

A represents the door, B the door-frame, and b the jainb thereof, to which the door'is hinged.

A stationary piece, C, which is preferably made of cast metal, having a cross-bar, d, on the side next the door, is secured to the frame B by means of a screw or otherwise, as may be desired. This piece may set in a mortise in the door-frame. It has one straight end, which comes flush with the dooijamb, and the screwpa-sses through the cross-bar on the side thereof, which is set in the mortise or against the door-frame. rIhe opposite or front side of this piece is slotted, as shown at c, from the end next to the doorjamb back nearly to the other end, or to such point as may be found convenient. I preferably make this slot larger at its end farthest from the doorjainb, so that the anchor D, which enters the same, may have a slight drop in order to overcome any tendency which it might otherwise have to Work toward the door.

In order that the piece C may be applied to a door-frame, no matter to which side thereof the door is hinged, this enlargement of the slot c may have a uniform extensiomin both directions, and it may either be heart-shaped, as shown in Fig. 3, circular, as shown in Fig. 4, or otherwise, as desired. The anchor D has a head, Whichmay or may not be in the form of a disk, and from which projects a shank having an eye to receive the chain orinat attachment.

To the door-n1at F, I secure a chain, G, by means of a fastening, E, which may be a disk having a shank, as shown in Figs. I0 and 11, and which passes through the mat, thus permitting of the attachment of a chain thereto; or the chain may be secured to the mat by a staple. (Shown in Figs. l2, 13, and let.)

' I prefer a chain-fastening, owing to the security it affords; but the same is not essential, nor is any particular means of making the connection with the mat.

The chain or mat attachment is secured to the anchor D, Which, while the door is open, is passed into the slot c and moved therein until the same has reached the enlargement or opposite extremity of the slot, Where it rests and is out of the way of the door. 0f course the closing of the door prevents the removal.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as nevv7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-i l. A fastening for a door-mat, consisting of the plate G, provided with a slot, c, open at one end, said plate being secured to the doorframe, with the open end of the slot flush with the j amb, anchor Din said slot, and mat attachment G, secured to said anchor, all substantially as shown and described, whereby said anchor is fastened within the slot When the door is closed, and is removable therefrom when the door is open, as and for the purpose set forth.
