Description

L c. OBER.
Lantern.
Patented )my 8,- 1862.
@a l w PATENT OFFICE.
LUKE O. OBER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,835, dated July 8, 1862.
To @ZZ whom, it. may concern.- Beit known that I, LUKE C. OBER, of Bos' ton, in the county of Suffolk and State of Mas sachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns whose lamps are intended to produce light by the inflammation of kerosene or other hydrocarbon liquid rich in carbon; and I do hereby declare the same to he fully described in the following specificaY tion,and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of whicht Figure 1 denotes au elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of my improved lantern.
In carrying out my invention I dispense with the ordinary chimney, and so construct the glass casing as to serve both as a chimney and as a easing to the lantern.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement ofan india-rubber packing between the detlector supporter and casing, whereby a tight connection is formed, so as to prevent any currents of air from passing upward between the said supporter and easing, such currents being caused to iow into the deflector and pass upward through and around it, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, A denotes the lamp, and B the glass lantern-case.
O denotes the lower metallic portion of the lantern, whose sides are formed foraminous.
The lamp is such as is in coalition use .for burning coal-oil-that is, it is vprovided with a wick-tube, D, wick E, and wick-elevator F, a foraminons deflector-supporter, G, anda defiector, H. On the upper portion of the de- Ileotoresupporter I form awide annular ilange, a, which I extend horizontally, and cover the same with indiav rubber or other suitable elastic material, d.
The object of making` the packing or cont nection elastic is to maintain a perfectly tight joint under any expansion ofthe metallic supporter, as well as to prevent any breakage of the glass portion by an expansion of the metallic portion.
The glass casing of the lantern is affixed to the eap`g,wliich is united to the lower portion ofthe lantern in the ordinary manner. 'Moreover, the said casing, near its lower part, is formed with a contraction or neck, b, the part c, or that portion intended to rest upon the packing d, being formed flaring, as seen in the drawings. Such part c, when in place resting upon the indiarubber packing, servers to prevent the currents ot' air from passing up around the outer edges of the supporter, whereby al1 the air passing upward is concentrated and made to pass into the detlector, the greater portion passing upward through the same, while a smaller nportion escapes through the orifices formed transversely through the lower part of the deflector and Hows upward around the external surface thereof, whereby the dame is properly supplied with oxygen.
fff, &c., denote metallic wires or guardbars having their lower ends fastened in the screw-cap g, while their upper ends are affixed iu ametallic cap or ange, I, extending around and supporting the upper, part of the glass casing B. K is a conical guard or heat-deflector, which serves to del-lect the heat of the lamp from the hand of a person, while L is the handle or bail, which is attached to the metallic cap I, as seen in the drawings.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S-
The arrangement of india-rubber or other elastic packing between the deilector -supporter and the glass casing of the lantern, whereby the currents of air are prevented from passing up between the said supporter and
