- My invention consists in the application of a flange, or an entire wheel or disk made of india-rubber, gutta -percha, or other elastic material, to the usual metallic stands or bases, in the following manner:
- the indiarubber, gutta-percha, or other elastic flange or wheel, marked R, is firmly secured to the metallic stands, marked M, by such means and in such form as the style of rack desired may require.
- Figs. 2 and 3- represent one style of the usual metallic rack, to which Iattach the elastic flange R2,which is also notched,to a gr'ooved piece of metal, marked M2, reaching from one to the other of the uprights, marked O, which are made fast to the base M. Near the base I place a rod, A, extending from one to the other of the uprights O, to shield the pen, which rests in a receding position from the base M. (See Fig. 3.)

Description
UNITED ASTATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORLANDO P. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PEN-RACK.
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, ORLANDO P. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pen-Rack; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in the application of a flange, or an entire wheel or disk made of india-rubber, gutta -percha, or other elastic material, to the usual metallic stands or bases, in the following manner: The indiarubber, gutta-percha, or other elastic flange or wheel, marked R, is firmly secured to the metallic stands, marked M, by such means and in such form as the style of rack desired may require.
That my invention may be the better understood I annex the following explanations:
'To-the base-of Figure l, marked M, I fasten an upright post, P, of any required height, near the top of which I make a shoulder. Upon this shoulder I place a wheel, marked R, Fig. 4, which may be all of india-rubber, or with a metallic 'center and an elastic or rubber flange upon the periphery, the india-rubberor elastic flange being notched, as seen by Fig. 4:, suiiiciently deep to receive and hold the pen, as
represented in Fig. 1, the said wheel revolving upon the post P, so that any pen or pencil desired may be taken, the rubber grasping all other'pens sufficiently tight as to prevent their' being displaced until required for use.
Figs. (See Fig. 3.)
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application of a notched flange or strip of india-rubber, gutta-percha, or other elastic material, as a pen-rack, in all and every form in which the same may be applied, the elasticity of the material rmly grasping the pen or pencil, so that when any one may be taken from the rack all others remain fast in their positions.
ORLANDO P. SMITH.
