. AWEIGHING ATTACHMENT FOR WAGONS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,854, dated February 15, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. PATTERSON,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Collins, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and usenected to the frame ofa vehicle which, when loads are placed thereon, will indicate upon a suitable scale and by a suitable pointer the number of pounds the vehicle is carrying, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section; Fig. 2, a cross-section; Fig. 3, a detail view of the fulcrum-bearing of the side levers; Fig. 4, a vertical sectional View of the same, and Fig. 5 a detail view of one of the clutches upon the outer ends of the side levers.

In the figures, A A represent the wheels of the vehicle which support the axles O O, and which are connected by the reach B.

D D represent two levers at each side of the running-gear, which are pivoted together at their inner ends by means of a rod, E. These levers are provided at their outer ends with clutches I I. The forward clutches fit over the bolster on the front axle and are provided with anti-friction rollers z i, as represented. The rear clutches fit either over the rear axle or over a bar on the same.

Projecting upward from the bar E are two rods, ,6 e, which are surrounded with coiledwire springs cl. These springs (Z d are surmounted with the fianged caps a a, to which is connected a pointer, 00. By the side of this pointer is a graduated index-plate, K. As

embrace the sides of the iron frame F. Seu cured in the faces of the plates G G are steel or case-hardened bearingpieces on m.

To the under side of the frame F are secured plates which have depending V-shaped bearing-pieces L, which rest upon the pieces on m. The point of contact of the bearing here is so small that there will be little or no friction.

The body of the vehicle can rest upon the metallic frame F. The springs and indicatingplate may be either upon the inside or outside of the body, but preferably on the outside.

I may use no body at all, but simply place the load upon the frame F.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, -is

1. The levers D D, hinged together at their inner ends, in combination with rods 6 e, springs d (1, caps a a, bearing a pointer, and the indicating-plate K, the several parts being connected to the running-gear of a wagon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the frame F and the bearings L, of the levers D, connected together at their inner ends, the rods 6, springs cl, caps a, bearings G, clutches I, and the vehicle running-gear and indicating devices, substantially as described.
