WEIGHING-SCALE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,709, dated July 19, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. YonN, of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVeighing- Scales for Wagons, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-m Figure 1 is a plan view of my combined scale and wagon, thebox being removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the wheels upon the nearest side being removed. Fig. 3 shows, in detail, one of the forked lugs attached to the rear end of the box, and Fig. 4 shows, in detail, a part of one of the cross-bars provided with the V-shaped bearing or notches, hereinafter described.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the iigures.
The design of my invention is to enable the load of a wa gon to be easily and accurately determined at any time or place; and to this end it consists, principally, in the construction of the scales mechanism and its combination with the running-gear and box of the wagon, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, further, in the mechanism as a whole, its several parts being constructed and combined to operate in themanner and for the purpose substantially as hereinafter set forth..
In the annexed drawings, A represents the front axle, B the rear axle, G an d G the wheels, D the reach, and E and F the front and rear bolster, respectively, composing the runninggear of a wagon o'f usual construction.
Upon the holsters E and F is placed a box, Gr, of ordinary form and construction, which box is coniined in lateral position by means of the usual stakes or standards H.
i Resting upon ^-shaped bearings e, that are secured upon the ends of the bolster E, just outside ofthe stakes H, are two beams, I, that are connected together at their front ends by means of a cross-bar, I', which is placed in front of and parallel with said bolster, while from said bearin gs said beams extend rearward to or beyond the rear bolster, F, and when occupyin g their normal positions rest upon the outer ends of the latter. Twoother beams or levers, K, connected together at their rear ends by means of a' cross-bar, K', are pivoted upon ^shaped bearin gs f, near the ends of the rear bolster, F, and from thence, extendin gforward, have their front ends loosely connected with the beams I at a point in front of the longitudinal center of the running-gear.
The box G is provided at its rear end with two forked lugs, g, which are rigidly attached' to its sides and, extending downward, span the cross-bar K' at points where are provided A-shaped bearings 7c, while near the front end of said box similar forked lugs y are pivoted upon the sides of the same and extend downward to and embrace A-shaped bearings z' that are formed upon the crossbar I', the arrangement being such as to cause said box to be suspended upon and sustained by said crossbars when the side bars or levers, I and K, occupy the positions shown bythe full lines of Fig. 2.
The upper edge of each beam I, in rear of' the pivotal connection ofthe beam K, is provided with a notched scale, and upon the same is suspended a weightL, the hook Z of which may be caused to engage with either of the notches of said scale.
The mechanism is now complete and is used as follows-viz: The article to be transported is placed within the box G, and the weights L moved rearward until they depress the rear ends of the levers I and raise said loaded box, causing said weight to be balanced in the usual manner. The scales upon said beams being properly marked to indicate the number of pounds necessary to be placed within said box in order to balance said weights when placed at different points upon said scales, it will be seen that it is an easy operation to determine the weight of the contents of said box at any time, or to load into the same a given weight of any article.
My improvement is especially useful for coal dealers, as it enables the weight of a loa-d to be determined wherever the wagon may be filled, while to the purchaser it affords means whereby the correctness of the alleged weight of a load of coal may be determined before acceptance.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1. The rectangular frames I K, connected together, as shown, in combination with the bolsters on which they are pivoted, and the wagon box or body, which rests directly upon them, substantially us and for the purpose specified.
2. The bolsters E and F, provided with the bearings c and j' respectively, the beams I, connected together by the cross-bar I', having the bearing z', the beams K, connected by the cross-bar K', having the bearings 7c, and pivoted to or upon the said beams I, and the box G, provided with the forked lugs g and g', zo which engage with said bearings c' and le, said parts being constructed and combined to operate in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
