UNITED STATES PATENT DFFIGE.
JACOB W. HILL, OF JEFFERSON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEIGHING ATTACHMENTS FOR WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,826, dated July 15, 1873; application filed March 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB 'W1LLIAMsoN HILL, of Jefferson, in the county of Green and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Weighing Attachment for Wagons, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved attachment, shown as applied to a wagon. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section of the same taken through the line :0 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section of the same taken through the line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved weighing attachment for wagons, to enable the load to be conveniently weighted without the necessity of driving to a platform-scale, and which shall be so constructed that the knife-edges will not be liable to wear while transporting the load.
In my invention the bolsters are made in two parts, one attached to the axle, while the other or false part supports, and is movable with, the wagon-box. The levers for lifting the box are pivoted to the fixed part of the bolster, and the weighing-levers-whieh have for their fulcrums bars that are pivoted to the lifting-levers-pass through slots in the fixed bolster, and converge and connect with the graduated arm of the beam or weighinglever, which has a fixed fulcrum beneath the box, and projects laterally through a slotted keeper.
A is the rear axle; B, the rear bolster; (J, the rear hounds; D, the reach; E, the forward axle F, the forward bolster; and G, the forward hounds, which parts are constructed and connected with each other in the ordinary manner. In the upper side of the bolsters B F are formed V-shaped longitudinal grooves, to receive the false bolsters H, the lower sides of which are made V-shaped, to fit into the V-shaped grooves of the bolsters B F. To the ends of the false bolsters H are attached the stakes I, to receive the wagon-box and hold it in place. To the lower sides of the false bolsters H, near their ends, are attached loops J, which project downward into transverse notches in the bolsters B F, pass through holes in the levers K, and
have knife-edges formed upon the lower side of their bends, to rest upon the levers K when weighing the load. The outer ends of the levers K project at the outer sides of the bolsters B F, and to them are pivoted the upper ends of the short bars L. In the lower ends of the bars L are formed round holes, to receive knife-edged pivots, attached to the ends of the crank-levers M, which are pivoted to the outer sides of the bolsters B F, and the outer ends of which project into such a position that they may be readily operated to throw the weight of the load upon the false bolsters H, and thus upon. the levers K, or to allow the load to rest upon the bolsters B F, the false bolsters H entering the grooves of the said bolsters B F.
If desired, the levers M, at each end of the wagon, may be connected, so that the four levers K may be operated by two levers, M. The inner ends of the levers K meet beneath the center of the wagon-box, where they are pivoted to each other and to a hook, N, which is pivoted to the inner end of a scale-beam, O. The scale-beam O is pivoted, near its inner end, to a support, P, attached to the reach D, and its outer end passes through a slot in a guide-bar, Q, attached to the wagon-box R.
The scale-beam may be arranged across the wagon, as shown in the drawings, or longitudinally with said wagon, as may be desired.
All the points of support, upon which the load rests while the weighing is being done, should be knife-edges, to enable the weighing to be done accurately.
Disclairning a wagon provided with a weighing attachment or apparatus upon which the box is elevated previous to the weighing.
I do claim as of my invention- The weighing attachment hereinbefore described, formed of the graduated beam 0 pivoted to a fixed support, I, on the reach, the convergent weighing-levers K having their fulcrums on bars L pivoted to hand-levers M, the false V-shaped bolsters H, and grooved and slotted bolsters B F, all arranged as shown and described, to operate as specified.
JACOB WILLIAMSON HILL.
