Be it known that 1, CHARLES SKIDMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homer, in the county of Dakota and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Im-' provements in Weighing-Vagons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new anduseful improvements in weighing-wagons; and its object is to provide scales of novel construction which may be readily attached to wagons of ordinary construction and by the use of which the contents of the wagon may be quickly and accurately determined.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in providing rods adapted to be pivotally mounted upon the bolsters of a wagon and each of which has upwardly-extending supporting-plates thereon, upon which the body of the wagon is adapted to rest. Inwardly-extending arms are formed integral with or rigidly secured to the rods, and their inner ends are connected by means of links to opposite sides of a forked plate having hooks which serve to support a pin extending laterally from opposite sides of a scale-beam. The inner end of this beam maybe secured in anysuitable manner to the sides of, the wagon-body.

The invention further consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagon having my improved scales in position thereon; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the wagon, the supporting-brackets of the rod being shown in section.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 1 are bolsters of a wagon, to the inner sides of each of which are secured two brackets 2 and 3, respectively, one of which has an eye 41- extending therethrough, while the other is provided with a-slot '5, which eX- tends thereinto from the upper edge. Mounted in each pair of brackets is a rod 6, having curved plates 7 formed integral therewith or rigidly secured thereto, and these plates are adapted to extend over the bolsters and support the wagon-body 8. An inwardly-extending arm 9 is secured to one end of each rod 6,and theinner ends of these rods have links lO pivoted thereto, said links being also pivoted to the upper end of a slotted plate 11. The arms 12, formed by the slot in said plate, are upwardly turned at their lower ends to form hooks 13, which are adapted to receive a pin 14, extending from opposite sides of a scalebeam 15. This scale-beam maybe of any suitable length, and the inner end thereof is preferably provided with an oppositelyextending pin 16, which extends into slots 17, formed within parallel cars 18, secured to the side of wagon body 8. These slots extend in to the ears in the lower edges thereof, and the pin is held within them by the weight of the lever.

It will be seen that when material of any kind is placed within the wagon -body the weight thereof will cause the plates 7 to bear downward upon the bolsters 1. To ascertain the weight of the material, an adjustable weight 19 is moved longitudinally upon beam 15 until the body is raised and balanced. When. the beam 15 is not in use, it can be readily detached by simply swinging pin 14 upward out of engagement with the hooks 13 and pin 16 downward out of engagement with cars 16. Transversely-extending plates 20 may be arranged upon the body 8 at each end thereof, so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the body in relationlto the bolsters 1.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with bolsters; of a plate pivoted to and extending upwardly from each of said bolsters, a wagon-body supported by said plates, arms connected to and movable with the plates, a scale-beam connected to the wagon-body, and a supporting-plate for the beam connected to the arms.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with the bolsters of a wagon,

of a plate pivoted to each bolster and extending thereabove, a Wagonbody supported upon the plates, arms connected to the plates and extending inwardly toward each other, a scale-beam pivoted at one end to the Wagonbody, a supporting-plate for said beam at a point intermediate its ends, and link connections between the plate and the arms.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with bolsters having brackets thereon,of rodsjournaled Within the brackets, plates extending therefrom and above the bolsters, a Wagon-body supported upon the plates, arms extending from the rods, a scalebeam pivoted at one end to the Wagon-body, a forked supporting-plate, hooks thereon adapted to form a fulcrum for the scale-beam, and link connections between the forked plate and the arms.
