Be it known that I, CASPER J. REAsoNnR, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at. Dows, in the county of l/V right andl State ofIowa, have invented newfandy useful Improvements in Automatic Wagon Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a wagon brake embodying va simple, durable and efficient means for utilizing the tendency ofthe load `to move forwardly and downwardly when"Y a wagon is descending a hill to apply the brakes, the application of the brakes being in proportion to the degree of the grade, and being therefore calculated to properly retard a vehicle incident tothe descent of a hill.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a wagon embodying my invention.

The wagon body is designated by l, and in accordance with my invention is provided at its underside with a forward wear plate 2 and with a rear wear plate 3, the said plate 3 being flanged as indicated by 4. Both of the said plates 2 and 3 are fixed to the body and are disposed transversely thereof. The body 1 is also provided on its bottom and at a point in rear of the plate 2 with a connecting member' 5, Figures 1 and 3.
In accordance with my invention trans` verse rollers 6 are arranged above the bolsters 7 of the running gear of the wagon. The said rollers 6 may be mounted to freely turn above the bolsters in any manner compatible with the purpose of my invention. I prefer, however, to provide the rollers 6 at their ends with reduced journals 8, Figures 2 and 4, and I also prefer to arrange the said journals 8 within 'circular series of anti-friction rollers 9, carried in' housings lO superimposed upon. and appro` prlately fixed to Vthe bolsters.
Also in accordance with my invention" I mount brake levers 11 on a transverse beam 12, fixed on the running gear frame 13to`f the wagon. f rI`he said levers 11 yare provided at'their outer ends'with shoes 14 arranged m opposed relation to the rear wheels 15 of the wagon'. The inner arms ofthe levers 11 are connected through themediumbf the links 16 with a longitudinal rod 17, and the said rod 17 is connected at its forward end to the member 5 carried as before stated by the body 1.
In virtue of the construction described, it will be manifest that when the wagon is descending agrade, the ybody 1 will move forwardly and downwardly and by soy doing will rock the levers 11 and apply the shoes 14 to the wheels 15 and thereby retard the movement of the wagon. VIt will also 'be manifest that the downward movement v of .the body 1 will be limited by the appli` cation of the shoes 14 to the peripheries of the wheels 15, and that the brakes will be applied in proportion to the load in or on the body 1 and the tendency of the said load to move with the body 1 forwardly and downwardly.
As best shown in Figure v1 the body 1 is v slightly inclined from the horizontal, the forward end of the body being higher than the rear end thereof. From .thisit follows that when the wagon is transversing a level road, the body whether loaded or unloaded will tend to assume the relative position shown in Figure 1, with thev result that the brakes will be released and will be maintained in released position. Manifestly the forward flange of the plate 3 will op'- erate to limit the rearward movement of the y body 1.
Notwithstanding the capacity of function and the practical advantage hereinbeforey ascribed to my improvement, it will be observed that the improvement it simple and inexpensive and therefore is not likely no greatly increase the cost of a wagon.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangementof the parts embraced in thepresent and pre,-
ferred embodiment of the invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do. not desire, however, to be understood as conning myself to the said specific construction. and lrelative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice ofthe invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention asdened in my appended claim.

The combination in an automatic wagon brake, of a wheeled frame including bolsters, transverse antirfriction rollers arranged above and alined with the bolsters and having reduced journals at their ends, housings on the bolsters and receiving the said journals of the rollers, anti-friction meansV disposed` in the" housings and surrounding the journals of the. rollers;l the forward transverse roller being located in a horizontal plane above thatv of the rear transverse roller, a body arranged in inclinedv position above. the rollersy andy having platesvsecured to the bottom thereof and bearing on said rollers, the rear plate having pendentY flanges at its forward and rear edges, transverse levers fulcrumed on the wheeled frame and having their outer ends equipped with brake shoes disposed in front ofthe rear wagon wheels, and a connection between'the inner ends of said levers and the bottom of the body'at the rear edgey of the forward plate, whereby when the body movesl forwardly the brake shoes wil-l be.
