WAGON-BRAKE.
V Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. is, 19113.
To all whom it may concern .a citizen of the United States, residing at Okemah, in the county of Okfuskee and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful lVagon-Brake, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to automatic wagon brakes, its object being to, provide simple and improved means whereby, when the wagon is moving down grade, the rear wheels thereof will be caused to move for wardly against the brake shoes supported in the paths thereof and will thus be held against rotation.
A further object is to provide simple means for locking the shifting portion of V the structure so as to prevent the application of the brakes. when the vehicle is travel ing down grade.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and 111 the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown. In said drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of the running gear of a vehicle provided with the brake constituting the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of said vehicle and mechanism. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking dog and its mechanism. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the connection bet-ween the brake tongue and the front axle. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the reach and the front axle and showing the locking dog in position.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the front axle and 2 the rear axle of a Vehicle, these axles being supported by the front and rear supporting wheels 3. A bolster 4 is mounted, as ordinarily, upon the front axle and is spaced therefrom by the hounds 5 to which the draft tongue 6 is pivotally connected. The king bolt 7 is carried by the bolster 4 and axle 1 and is slidably engaged by the ion gitudinally slotted front end portion of a reach '8 extending from the rear'axle 2 and Be itknown that I, HUGH R. MOiKISSICK,
MGKISSICK ADMINI$TRATQR 0F SAID HUGH provided, adjacent its rearend, with hounds 'the reach relative to the bolt 7. A cross strip '11 1s mounted at its center upon the reach 8, and has links 12 suspended from the end portions" thereof, these links serving to support the end portions of a brake beam 13 I which is disposed in front of the rear wheels 3 and carries brake shoes 14. A tongue 15 extends forwardly from the center of the brake beam and is pivotally mounted, at its front end, between cars 16 extending rearwardly from a plate 17 which is bolted or otherwise secured to the rear face of the axle 1 at the center of said axle. A link 18 connects the dog 11 to an arm 19 extending radially from one end or a rock shaft 20, said shaft being journaled uponthe bottom of the wagon body A. An operating lever 21 extends from this shaft 20 at a point where it can be easily reached by the driver.
In order that the up and down movement of the dog 11 within slot 10 may take place freely, the front bolster f is cut away where it bridges the slot 10 so that the free end of the dog 11 will always be exposed no matter what may be the angle of the bolster at relative to the reach 8. This cut away portion has been indicated at 22- in Fig. 5. It will be apparent that when the dog 11 is housed within the slot 10, the reach 8 cannot slide forward on the front axle 1 but is held against such movement and, therefore, the brake shoes 1 1 are kept out of contact with the rear wheels 3. However should it be desired to have the shoes 14 applied automatically to the rear wheels 3 while the vehicle is traveling down grade, it is merely necessary to shift lever 21 so as to pull on the link 18 and raise the dog 11 out of the slot 10. While the vehicle is traveling down grade the body A will move forward and cause the reach 8 to travel therewith and thus slide along the axle 1. As the tongue 15 of the brake beam is not capable of moving forward relative to the front axle 1, it will be apparent that the rear wheels 3 will thus move forward into contact with the shoes 14 and the rotation of said wheels will be retarded or stopped, according to the pressure exerted against the shoes. In order that the forward movement of the body A relative to the front bolster may be facilitated, a trough 23 is preferably mounted on the upper bolster 24 and an anti-friction roller 25 is loosely mounted in the trough and isvcontacted by and supports the front end portion of the body A. Wear plates 26 are preferably secured along the bottom of the body A and are provided alongEtheir front ends, with hooked extensions 27 adapted to move against the roller and thusto hold the roller 25 normally against the back I the front axle, and means carried by the reach for preventing such sliding movement.
wall of the trough 23.
Whenever it is desired to look the brake mechanism against further operation, lever 21 is shifted so as to move the dog '11 back into the slot 10 whereupon forward sliding movement of the reach Sis prevented. It is of course to be understood that the wagon body A engages the rear'bolster 28 so both thebody and bolster will move forward together. 7
What is claimed-ffis The combination with front and rear wheel supported axles and a reach connecting the axles, of aplate securedto the rear' face of the front axle in the center thereof ears, a tongue pivotally mounted between the ears and extending rearwardlyfrom the plate, said tongue being adapted to swing laterally, a flexible connection between the rear portion of the tongue and the reach, said tongue being extended under the reach, brake shoes connected to the tongue for engaging the rear wheels, said reach being adapted to slide longitudinally relative to In testimony that I claim the foregoingas my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence-of two witnesses.
