Be it known that I, HARVEY B. YARYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fifth-Vheel, of which the following is a specication. i
This invention has relation to ifth-wheels for vehicles, and is especially adapted for wagon and buggy use, and among the objects in view are to obviate the use of a king-bolt through the axle and head-block, to dispose the weight and wear upon the curved wearing plate or circles, whereby I obviate all looseness and side play, and so adapt the parts as to uniformly wear, thus rendering. the connection tight and even until the device is entirely worn out.
Vith these general objects in View the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and p'articularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a head-block and axle connected byafth-wheel constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective ofthe iifth-wheel detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same; Fi g. 4, a transverse section.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing myinvention I form two sec tions-the upper section 1 and the lower section 2. Each of these sections is formed integral, and the upper section 1 comprises two outer curved bearing-plates 3, from which there project inwardly from their upper faces securing-plates 4 for about one-third the distance between said plates. Here they terminate and are connected by a slightly-inclined selnicircular bar 5, forwardly'projecting and at its center depressed below the plane of the securing-platesl 4. From the center of the semicircular bar there projects rearwardly a transverse neck 6, provided at its center with a circular opening 7, and in rear of said opening with a smaller opening 8, and from the latter there projects upwardly the usual rear inclined brace 9, the upper end of which is connected to the head-block 10, which by bolts is connected to the securing-plates 4,

are provided with axle-embracing lugs l 5, opposite the lugs 1l of the upper section 1. The ends of the plates 13 occur opposite each other and are connected by an arched plate 16, formed integral therewith, and is provided are provided with a head-block embracing with a depending hollow boss 17 ,which occurs opposite and is mounted for oscillation in the cylindrical opening 7 in the neck 6. This completes the construction of the fifth-Wheel. The arch 16 is elevated a distance above the supporting-plates 13 agreeing with the distance the neck G is depressed below the plates 4, so that the sect-ions practically interlock, and the weight and frictional wear of the wheel all occur upon the curved wear- plates 3 and 12 and between the neck 6, surrounding the openings 7 and the under surface of the arch 16, these parts wearing in unison, so as to always form a snug connection, and thus obviating any rolling of the body as caused by uneven wear.
Having described my invention, what I claim isy 1. In a fifth-wheel, the combination of upper and lower sections, each of which is provided with outer curved bearing-plates and inwardly-disposed securing-plates, those of the lower section being connected by an arch' having a central depending boss and those of the upper section being connected by an outwardly-disposed curved bar and with a rearwardly-disposed transverse neck having a circular opening for the reception of the boss of the arch of the lower section, whereby the two sections are interlocked, substantially as specified.
2. The combination,with the section 1, hav- I i ing opposite curved bearing-plates 3, inwardly-disposed securing-plates 4, connected to the upper surface of the bearing-plates and connected by the curved bar 5, inclined to IOO the front, and provided with the rearwardlyprojecting neck 6 and the opening 7 and depressed below the plane of the plates`4, of the section 2, arranged below the section 1, and having the curved bearing-plates 12, securingplates 13, projecting from the under edge of the same inwardly, and the upwardly-arched connecting-plate 1G, and the cylindrical depending boss 17, mounted in the opening 7, substantially as specified.
3. The co1nbination,with the section 1, having the curved bearing-plates 3 arranged opposite each other, and the inwardly-disposed plates 4, the head-block mounted on the plates and bolted thereto, and the curved inclined bar connecting the ends of the plates and having the integral disposed neck 6, having the cylindrical opening 7, of the axle, the section 2, the same comprising opposite curved bear- Ving-plates 12, bearing against the plates 3 and having inwardly-disposed arms 13, bearin on the upper face of the axle, and the upwardlycurved arch 1G, having the depending boss 17 inserted downwardly through the opening 7 of the neck G at the opposite section, each of said sections being formed integral, substantially as specified.
4. A fifth-Wheel composed of two integral sections 1 2, eaeh of which is provided with outer curved bearing-plates 3 12, the lower section having an arch 16 and the upper `section having a depressed neck 6, and the bearing 17, connecting the neck of the upper section with the arch of the lower section, whereby the two sections are interloeked, as set forth.
