UNITE STATES ENT FFICEQ COMBINED CLOTHES-SUSPENDING CLAMP AND TAG-HOLDER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,464, d t d February 8, 1887.
Application filed November 13, 1885. Serial No. 182,775. (X0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GYRUs N. CARSON and WILLARD WITHERELL, citizens of the United States, residingv at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Clothes'Suspending Clamps and Tag-Holders, of which the following is aspecification.
Our invention relates to a novel combined clothes-suspending clamp and tag-holder for displaying hosiery and other goods fromracks or rods, and which is adapted to be placed upon or removed from the rack or rod and the article to which it is attached, and is provided with a suitable tag-holder.
Our invention consists in a simple and cheap device especially adapted to the uses above named, which possesses as its distinguishing feature a pair of clamping-j aws made of single pieces of wirebent completely around to form loop shaped gripping -jaws and hinged together, one of said pieces being extended beyond the hinge-connection and bent to form a hook by which the clamp may be suspended, and the other jaw extended in a similar manner, and its end extended to form a label= holder, as will hereinafter appear.
Our invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations, hereinafter more specifically described, and defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a spring hosiery and goods suspending clamp constructed according to our invention; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the same, showing by full lines the jaws closed and by dotted lines the jaws iopen; Fig. 3, a perspective of the pivotal spring-rod; Fig. 4, a similar representation of the tag-supporting end of one of the jaws, as will hereinafter appear.
In carrying out our invention the various parts may be formed, arranged, and combined in the following-described manner:
ThejawAis formed of a single piece of wire, first bent midway of its length to form projecting loops (1 a, then bowed to form parallel segmental arms a a, and again bent completely around to form hinge-eyes a arranged directly opposite to each other in the same axial line.
The ends of this wire are then bent at obtuse angles to the jaws and parallel to each other to project beyond the hinge, and are finally bowed over and across to form a book, A, which latter will provide means for suspending the clamp, as will hereinafter appear. The terminals of the Wire are securelyjoined together by a short sheet-metal tube; a, soldered thereto, and the entire piece forms a light strong wire frame. 7
The jaw or frame B is formed of a single piece of wire bent in a similar manner to the jaw A, hereinbefore described, with loops b,
parallel segmental arms I), and hingeeyes b, arranged axially opposite to each other, coincident with the corresponding eyes, a, of the jaw A, and are held together and turn freely upon awire rod, D,which completes thehingeconnection. The ends bi of the wire composing the.jaw B are extended beyond the hingeeyes b and are similarly bowed over, but in opposite directions, and have their ends soldered or otherwise secured to the overlying sections at b, and thus provide a double-j awed extension or arm, B,which will securely hold a tag or metal plate, E, between said overlying ends. The metal plateEis provided with loops or ears 6, to overlap and clasp the wire of the jaw-extensions B, and with slots or lips e, to receive the edge of a card or tag, and thus serve as a tag-supporter, and also as a means for holding the ends of the wire securely together.
I The spring-arms d d of the rod D are bent at right angles from the middle portion, d, and are bowed in opposite directions to and are arranged parallel with tlie arms a b,and conform to the shape and position of said arms. extremities of the arms (1 at rest upon theloops a b of the clamping-jaws, and hold them. together with a yielding or elastic pressure.
Two rods 1) are employed, as shown in the drawings, to secure greater strength, elasticity, and stability, and their bowed or segmental ends d are arranged with their concaved braces opposite each other; but one spring-rod may be employed, if preferred.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the device abovedescribed without departing from my invention, and some of the novel features herein claimed may be em- The ICO
ployed irrespective of other features. The spring-rod D,with its curved segmental arms, performs a useful function, but other forms of springs may be employed without lessening the advantages derived from forming the suspension'hook and tag or label holding extension-arm integral with the bowed wire jaws herein claimed.
It will be observed that the spring-arm D constitutes a novel feature of the device, as its middle straight portion forms the pintle of a double-hinged or pivotal connection between the jaws. Its ends provide springs for holding the jaws together with an elastic pressure, and the middle portion of the rod serves, further, as a stiffening brace or connection between the remote hinged connections.
The spring-j aws may be separated to receive any desired article to be suspended by simply grasping the extensions A B, and drawing them toward each other, and when these extensions A B are released the spring jaws will grasp and hold the article between them.
\Ve claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination, in a spring-clamp, the jaws A B, each formed ot'a single piece of wire bent to form looped clamping-jaws and hingejoints, and rods D, formed of bent single wires, the mid-length portions ofwhich form t-hepivot of the hinged jaws A B and the ends of which are bent downwardly to act on the lower parts of said hinged jaws as springs, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination, in a spring clamp, the jawsAB, each formed of a single pieceof wire bent to form looped clampingjaws and hingejoints, one bent to form a suspending and the other a label holder, and rods D, formed of single wires bent in such manner that their midlength portions form the pivot for the hingejaws A B and their downwardlyextended ends act as springs on the lower part of said clamping-jaws, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In aspringclamp, the combination, with thejaw A, provided with a label-supporting extension-arm, A, of thejaw 13, provided with a suspension-hook formed upon its extensionarm B, and the spring D, arranged to pivot and hold said jaws together with, an elastic pressure, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CYRUS N. CARSON. \VILLARD VITHERELL.
