GAP.-
No 357,418. Patented Feb. 8, 1887.
NrrED STATES PATENT 'FFICEO JOSEPH J. SELDNER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
. CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,418, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed July 9, 1886. Serial No. 207,575. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:'
Be it known that I, J osEPH J. SELDNER, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specificatlon.
My invention relates to an improvement in caps; and it consists in a cap which has an elastic piece inserted at any suitable point, so as to adapt the cap to fit heads of different sizes, as will be more fully described herein after.
The object of my invention is to produce a cap which is especially designed to be worn by travelers, and which is made elastic, so that practically only one size need ever be made, but which size is adapted to fitall heads within a given capacity.
Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of different-shaped caps embodying my invention.
A represents a traveling-cap, which may be given any shape that may be preferred, and in one side of which, at any desired point, there is inserted an elastic strip, B, of rubber or any other material that has sufficient elasticity to adapt the cap to fitheads of different sizes. The shape of the cap or the shape of the inserted elastic piece is immaterial, for this may be varied at will. The cap being made elastic in size, one size will fit the heads of men and large-sized boys, andthus practically only one size of cap need ever be made. Should a smaller size be desired for children,a second size will be made. One size, however, will practically be all that is needed.
Heretofore in selling these traveling-caps upon trains, boats, or ships it has been difficult to always supply just the size desired. By
inserting an elastic strip, as here shown, inthe 4 5 side of the cap, the cap is made adjustable, so
as to fit heads of all sizes within a-given capac'ity.
I am aware that a knit cap composed of a number of sections having parallel sides and tapering tops is not new, and this I disclaim. My invention differs from this in taking a cap made of any non-elastic woven material and inserting in one side a section of rubber cloth,
whereby the cap is made adjustable in size, so
as to fit different-sized heads.
I am also aware that coiled and rubber springs have been inserted in the band of a cap, and this I also disclaim. My invention dif fers from this in the use of rubber cloth, which 50 extends from the lower edge to the top of the cap,tl ius causing every part of the cap on that side to stretch alike, and causing the cap to form a tightfitover the wholetop of the head,
adapting it especially for the use of travelers on the cars, where the ordinary hat or cap is liableto be blown away."
Having thus described my invention, I claim-1 A cap, A, made. from a non-elastic material JOSEPH J. SELDNER.
