LIFE-BOAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 18, 1914. Serial No. 819,594.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TIHOR BALAZs, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Saltsburg, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life- Boats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to life boats, and has for its object to provide a life boat, with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for riding the swells of the waves to prevent capsizing of the boat.
Further objects of the invention is to provide an attachment for life boats for the purpose set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily set up with respect to the boat and inexensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is'to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure l is a perspective view of a life boat showing the adaptation therewith of an attachment therefor in accordance with this invention, Fig.
2 is an elevation of the boat showing the attachments in operative position and as riding the Waves to maintain the boat on keel, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one of the attachments.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 4 denotes a life boat and attached to each side at the top thereof and centrally with respect to the length of the boat is a semicircular member 5. The flat edge 6 of the member 5 is arranged in juxtaposition to the top edge of that side of the boat 4 with which the member 5 associates, and the said member 5 is hinged, by a plurality of hinges 7 to the side of the boat 4. The member 5 centrally thereof is provided with a conveXo-concave portion 8 formed by offsetting the member 5. The said convexo-concave portion 8 starts from the rounded edge 9 of said member 5 and gradually decreases in width inwardly. The said portions 8 are provided in the members 5 for the purpose of facilitating the riding of the crest of the waves by said members 5. As the members 5 project outwardly from each side of the boat 4 and as said members 5 are hinged to the boat, it is obvious that they will readily adjust themselves with respect to the swell of the waves, and under such conditions steady the boat and also prevent the boat from capsizing.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a life boat, of a pair of oppositely disposed semi-circular members hinged to the sides of the boat near the top edge of said sides, each of said members provided with a centrally disposed conveXo-concave portion.
2. The combination with a life boat, of a pair of elements projecting in opposite directions and hinged to the sides of the boat, each of said elements having a centrally disposed convexo-concave portion.
8. The combination with a life boat, of a pair of elements projecting in opposite directions and hinged to the sides of the boat, each of said elements having a centrally disposed conveXo-concave portion, each of said conveXo-concave portions gradually decreasing in width inwardly.
