U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GALLAGHER, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, CHRISTOPHER DORFLINGER, ANSON J UDSON, AND ANTOINE REGAN,
ALL OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN LIGHTING AND TRIMMING LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,733, dated Ju11c24, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN GALLAGHER, of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, haveinvented an Improvement in. Lamps for Burning Kerosene, Goal, or Similar 0 is, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists of an improvement in burners for lamps-burning kerosene, coal, or similar oils, so as to obviate I the necessity of removing or displacing the reference being had to the accompanying drawings, with letters of reference marked thereon, the red lines showing the positions of I the parts when it is ,required to fill, trim, or
light the lamp.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation giving an external and. also an internal view and vertical cross-section ofthe wick-tube. Fig. 2 is a-longitudinal elevation of the same, showing the opening or door through which the'lamp is filled, trinnned,-and lighted. Fig. 3 shows a plan of the wick-tube with its appendages. Fig. 5 is the wick-tube and appendages in the different positions required for filling, trimming, or lighting the lamp.
' A is the body or shell of the burner with my improvement, which I construct of a cylindrical form, and of a diameter and length suitable forthe lamp for which it is intended.
The sides of the body A, I perforate to ad mit the proper supply of-air to support com- 'bustion. On one side of the body A, and near the center longitudinally, I make an opening, B, snfficiently large to allow the .wicktubeO to protrude. The opening B is fitted with a door or slide, D, which is also perforated the same as the body A, to which it is attached by a hinge or other suitable device. On opposite a sides of the body A, at right angles with openl ng'B, and on or near a line horizontal with the center of the opening B, are situated the bearings E E, which support the wick-tube G, A
together with the disk or cover F. This disk or cover has attached to it two journals, I I, l to correspond with and fit the bearings E E. In the body A one of the journals I terminates outside in a crank, G, to which is attached a spring pin or wrist, H, intended to keep the wick-tube O in a vertical or proper position by means of a corresponding.opening or depression in the body A.
J is a cone or deflector, which has at its top or apex an opening of the ordinary form. Its base terminates in a flange in the ordinary I way, and is supported by an internal projec- F tion in the body of the burner A. The cone J, together with the chimney Q, may be held down by any of the ordinary devicesnow in use for that purpose.
The body A is attached to the fount or body 'of the lamp R by means of a collar, 0, either sliding over, or by means of a screw in the ordinary way.
In operating a burner of my improvement 7 the door D is opened, the spring-pin II is withdrawn from the hole or depression in the l body A, the crank is then depressed or turned to about onefourth of a revolution. This causes the wick-tube O to protrude through 1 the opening B sufficiently to admit of filling, trimming, or lighting the lamp without the necessity of removing or disturbing the chimney.
l Having thus, I believe, fully described my invention, I now set forth my claims.
I claim asmyinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent thejournals I I, or their equivalents, and opcrating substantially as and for the purposes herein described. p I 2. The opening B, with its door D, for the purposes herein described and set forth.
JOHN GALLAGHER.
