J. R. BAKER.
Lamp Chimney Holder.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMEs E. BAKER, or KEN'DALLvILLaYrNDIANA.
IMPROVED MODE 0F REMOVING CHHVINEYS AND FILLING LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,6611, dated June 24, 1862.
T0 all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES R. BAKER, of Kendallville, in the county or Noble and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line x x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan or top viewof the same, with the cone and chimney detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in those lamp-burners which are designed for burning coal-oil and other hydrocarbons, and which are provided with a draft-chimney, in order to supply the flame with a requisite amount of oxygen to support proper combustion.
rlhe invention consists in having the draftchimney attached to a ring or annular plate, which is connected to a tube that is fitted within the burner and allowed to slide freely up and down therein, the tube having a hole made in it near its lower end, and all so arranged as to admit of the chimney being raised above the burner to escape the wick and admit of the same being lighted without detaching the chimney from the burner, and
also admit of the lamp being filled without unscrewing the burner from it.
To enable those skilled in-the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the burner, which may be constructed in the usual way or like ordinarycoal-oil burners. y
B is the wick-tube secured centrally in the burner, and C is a tube which is fitted vertically in the burner and allowed to slide freely up and down therein. This tube C may be of semi-cylindrical form in its transverse section, the iiat side of which is in contact with one side of the wick-tube B.
To the upperend of the sliding tube C there is attached a horizontal annular plate, D, which receives the cone or defiector E and the glass draft-chimney E', the cone and chimney being secured to the plateD bya set-screw, F, or other suitable fastening connected with said plate. The annular plate D, when the tube C is fully depressed,ts within the upper part of the burner A, the cone andchimney having the same relative position with the wicktube as in ordinary burners. (See Fig. l.) The lower part of the tube C' is provided with a projection or stop, a, which prevents it from being withdrawn from the burner. The tube C has a hole, b, made in it near its lower end, and this hole, when the tube O is fully raised, is above the bottom ofthe burner, and the lamp may be filled by simply pouring the oil into the tube C through the hole b, the lower end ofthe tube being open.
When the tube C is raised, the cone and chimney, it will be seen, rises with it, as shown in red,Fig. 1, and the wick-tube is exposed, so that the wick may be lighted. rlhe lamp therefore may be tilled and lighted without det-aching the chimney from the burner or the burner from the lamp.
I am aware that the cone and-chimney of a lamp-burner have been attached to a ring or plate provided with sliding guide-rods to admit of the cone and chimney being raised to expose the wick; but these rods served the function of guides only and did not admit of the lamp being iilled, Whereas in my invention and improvement the tube C performs the double function of a guide and filling-tube.
I do not claim, therefore, a sliding guide or guides fitted in a burner with a ring or plate attached, having the cone and chimney secured to it; but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The attaching of the annular plate D,Which has the cone or deflector E and draft-chimney secured to it, to a sliding tube O,fitted in the burner A, and provided with a hole or opening, b, substantially as shown, to serve the double purpose of a guide and filling-tube, and admit, by the raising of the tube, the wick being lighted and the lamp lled without detaching the chimney from the burner or the burner from the lamp, as herein set forth.
J AMES R. BAKER.
