UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEOBG W. JAQUES, OF BURTON, OHIO.
PLASTERERS HAWK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 357,203, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed March 12, 1886.
To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORG W. JAQUES, of Burton, in the countyof Geauga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plaster'ers Hawks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which' Figure 1 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line a; x in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in both figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a plasterers or masons hawk in which the board on which the mortar is received, and which is subjected to expansion and contraction due to alternate moistening and drying, may be rendered light and rigid, and at the same time may be freeto expand and contract without warping or cracking. I
My invention consists in a metallic frame Y secured to the back of the board, andheld in place by clips, screws, and the handle, all the fixed parts of the frame being in one line parallel with the grain of the wood,so that they are unaffected-by expansion or contraction.
The board A is of the usual form, and in the.- center thereof is secured a bolt, B, upon which is received the handleO, having in the outer end thereof a nut, D, fitting the threaded end of the bolt B. A circular concave centrallyapertured metallic plate, E, is received on the bolt B, between the inner end of the handle and the back of the board A,with the concave side of the platetoward the board. Between the plate E and the back of the board is placed an elastic rubber washer, F, which is compressed by screwing the handle 0 down upon the plate E. The plate E is provided with a plane edge, a, which is secured to the back of 'theboard A by screws 1), and in the edge of the plate E are formed four notches, c, for receiving the ends of the wire frames G, which extend a short distance under the plate, and are clamped against the under surface of the board A by screwing the handle 0 upon the bolt B.
The wire frames G each consist of a wire ex- 5o tending across the grain of the board A, bent Serial No. 195.053. (N0 model.)
.inward for a short distance parallel with itself at opposite ends, then bent outward at an angle of about forty-five degrees, and inserted under the plate E, through the notches c, as already described. Loops (1, formed at the ends of the wire frames G, are received upon screws 6, projecting from the back of the board A, and the center of each frame G is secured upon the board by the clip H, the clipsH and the bolt B being arranged on a line running parallel with the grain of the wooc. The Irames G support the edges of the board A, and the loops (1 permit of the lateral movement of the screws 6 and the portion of the board by which the pins are carried.
Having thus described m y invention, what I claim as new, Patent, is
1. The combination, withaboard,A,forming the body of the hawk, of a metal frame attached to the board on a center, line of the board parallel with the grain thereof, and provided with a slotted support at the edges of the board for supporting the edges while allowing the board to swell and shrink, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the board A. of the bolt B, handle O, concave plate E, and one or moremetallic frames held by the plate -E, and provided with slotted arms arranged to support the edges of the board, substantially asherein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the board A, of tl.e bolt B, handle O, the concave plate E, elastic washer F, wire frames G, and clips H, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. As-an improved article of manufacture, a masons or plasterers hawk formed of the board A,bolt B,inserted in the center thereof, the handle Q, received on the bolt, theconcave notched plate E, rubber washer F, wire frames G, having the loops d, the screws 6, projecting from the board and received in the loops, and the clips H, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORG W. JAQUES.
