- One of the objects of this invention is to provide an inverted L-shaped card which will carry advertising or display material and which is supported in a carrying carton in such a manner that it does not interfere with the shipping and handling of the carrying carton and its contents, but when the carton is placed on the store shelf the display portion of the card is positioned substantially at right angles to the side or front of the carton so that it can be readily read and attract the attention of shoppers passing through the aisles of the store.

Kraus I ABSTRACT: An inverted L-shaped card carrying advertising display material which is adapted to be positioned in a carryl DISPLAY MEANS FOR USE WITH A CARRYING CARTON One of the objects of this invention is to provide an inverted L-shaped card which will carry advertising or display material and which is supported in a carrying carton in such a manner that it does not interfere with the shipping and handling of the carrying carton and its contents, but when the carton is placed on the store shelf the display portion of the card is positioned substantially at right angles to the side or front of the carton so that it can be readily read and attract the attention of shoppers passing through the aisles of the store.
Another object of this invention is to provide a very simple and inexpensive display card which may call attention to the product associated therewith.
Other objects will become apparent as this description progresses.
IN THE DRAWINGS FIG. I is a view of a conventional-carrying carton for use in connection with pop bottles and showing the invention herein as applied thereto, with the display portion of the card positioned parallel to the sidewall of the carrying carton;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 but showing the display portion in a position in which it would generally be positioned in the store when on a shelf;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view of the carrying carton and showing the manner in which the display card is attached to the carton with the display portion thereof extending outwardly and forwardly of the carton; and
FIG. 4 is a plan view showing the display card of this invention.
I The carrying carton, which is made of cardboard or other similar material, is generally indicated by the numeral and is of conventional construction and forms no part of this invention. The carrying carton generally comprises opposite spaced sidewalls l2, opposite end walls 14, a bottom 16, and a central divider 18 to which is connected a handle portion 20. Spaced partitions 22 divide the carton into six compartments, each indicated by the numeral 24. The top edges of the partitions 22 slope or incline downwardly from the divider 18 to the opposite sidewalls 12. The carrying carton is normally collapsible when empty. .While one particular form of carrying carton is shown, it'will be understood that the invention herein v is applicable to other types and styles of carrying cartons.
The invention comprises a display card, generally indicated at 26, which is best shown in FIG. 4 and is formed from a single strip of cardboard or like material and is of a generally inverted L-shaped configuration. It has a vertical portion I designated by the numeral 28, which will sometimes hereinafter be referred to as the stem portion, and a horizontal portion designated by the numeral 30, which may sometimes hereinafter be referred to as the flag portion.
The flag portion or horizontal portion 30 is a continuation of the upper part of the stem portion 28 and extends laterally thereof. A slit 32 is provided between the lower portion of the 'flag portion 30 and the stem portion 28 and a score line 34 extends upwardly of the slit 32 and in alignment therewith. The upper portion of the display card may have on the upper stem portion 28 an advertising message 36, such as shown in FIG. 4, but essentially the advertising message 38 is carried on the flag portion 30 as this is the portion which in use isdisplayed to extend outwardly and forwardly of the sidewall of the carrying carton in the nature of a flag. It extends generally perpendicu- I81v or at right angles to the sidewall 12 of the carrying carton. The display card may have advertising material imprinted on display card can also be posiTionedhrside the carrying carton adjacent to and parallel with the inside sidewall 12 of the carrying carton. The lower end of the flag portion will extend inside the sidewall of the carrying carton. The upper portion of the flag of the display card as well as the upper portion of the stem will extend above the sidewall, as best shown in FIG. 1. In this position the display card may be shipped or transported in the carrying carton and no damage to the display card will result since it does not extend outwardly of the sides or top of the carrying carton while in shipment.
When the carton is displayed on the shelves in the store and it is desired that the-flag portion extend at right angles to the side of the carrying carton it is merely necessary to elevate the display card from that shown in FIG. 1 so that the flag portion 30 extends above the upper edge of the sidewall 12 of the carton. The flag portion 30 is then bent outwardly along the score line 34 to be substantially perpendicular to the stem portion 28. The display card is then lowered to assume the position shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 in which the slit 32 will then be in engagement with the sidewall 12 and the flag portion 30 will be substantially perpendicular or at an angle to the sidewall of the carrying carton. The flag portion thus extends laterally outward or forward of the carrying carton so that the advertising material 38 on the flag portion can be readily seen when the customer walks down the aisle of the store. The flag portion tion 28 should be inserted in one of the compartments 24 at either end of the carrying carton so that the flag portion 30 will extend across the remaining compartments on the same side. The length of the display card will then be wholly confined within the length of the carrying carton.
. With the advertising material printed on both sides of the display card the display card may be positioned in either of the opposite end compartments. As shown in FIG. 1, the flag portion extends to the right of the stem portion, but if positioned in the opposite end compartment the flag portion would extend to the left of the stem portion.
The display card can be made of very inexpensive material and inexpensively produced. It can be readily inserted in the i carrying carton and will not interfere with the handling of same during shipment or transporting, and when displayed in a store will serve a very useful function of calling attention to the product.
It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made from the foregoing without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
' tion, an upper portion and a flag portion extending laterally of said upper portion, a vertical score line between said upper portion and said flag portion and a slit extending below said score line, said stem portion insertable in an end compartment between the bottle and the inside of one of the sidewalls of the carrying carton and positioned parallel-and contiguous to the both sides of the flag portion 30 as well as on the opposite inside of said sidewall with the slit engaging the upper edge of said sidewall to limit the downward movement of said stem, with the upper part of the stern portion extending above the top of the said sidewall of the carton, said flag portion extending parallel to said sidewall and across the length of the next adjacent compartment but within the length of the carton when the carton is initially transported so that the flag portion does not extend either beyond the length of the carton or outwardly away from said sidewall during such transport, said flag portion adapted to be folded along said score line to extend outwardly substantially afright angles tosaid sidewall of the E carton when in display position and said flag portion carrying g V an advertising inscription thereon.
