The hair is trimmed to a generally shorter length toward one end and to a generally longer length toward the other end thereof so that when the wig is mounted on the wearer in one direction the wearer exhibits a relatively short hair styling effect, and when the wig is mounted on the wearer in the opposite direction the wearer exhibits a relatively long hair styling efi'ect.
WIG CONSTRUCTION This invention has to do with wig construction and more particularly to wigs which are adaptable for exhibiting a large variety of different hair stylingsby the wearer thereof.
Heretofore, attempts have been made to construct convertible wigs, but such attempts have not been entirely satisfactory. Convertible wigs of the prior art employed detachable interchanging hairpieces which were cumbersome, expensive, inconvenient and frequently required undesirable fastening techniques. The present invention concerns a new and improved wig construction which overcomes the problems encountered with prior construction, as will become apparent as the description proceeds.
Briefly, our invention contemplates the provision of a wig for use on a human head including a base member of generally flexible sheet material, and which is of generally hemispherical shape to encircle the head of the wearer. The base member has a first portion as well as an oppositely disposed second portion. It is removably secured to the wearers head in a first position wherein the first portion is directed towards the front of the wearers head and the second portion is directed towards the rear of the wearers head, and it is also removably secured to the wearers head in a second position wherein the second portion is disposed towards the front of the wearers head and the first portion is disposed towards the rear thereof. Hair is secured to and distributed over the area of the outer surface of the base member so that it overlies the top of the wearers head and conceals the natural hair of the wearer from view. The hair is trimmed to a generally shorter length towards the second portion of the base member with respect to the first portion thereof so that when the wig is mounted on a human head with the first portion toward the front of the head the wearer exhibits a variety of relatively short hair stylings, and when the wig is mounted on a human head with the second portion toward the front of the head the wearer exhibits a variety of relatively long hair stylings.
There has been outlined rather broadly the more important features of the invention in order that the detailed description thereof that follows may be better understood and in order that the present contribution to the art may be better appreciated. There are, of course, additional features of the invention that will be described hereinafter which will form the subject of the claims appended hereto. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the conception on which this disclosure is based may readily be utilized as the basis for the design of other structures for carrying out the several purposes of the invention. It is important, therefore, that the claims be regarded as including such equivalent constructions as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Several embodiments of the invention have been chosen for purposes of illustration and description, and are shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a wig, constructed in accordance with the concept of our invention, mounted on a human head;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a wig showing the interior thereof;
FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view showing the wig in a position wherein it exhibits a relatively short hair styling effect;
FIG. 4 is a transverse sectional view, similar to FIG. 3, but showing the wig in a position wherein it exhibits a relatively long hair styling effect;
FIG. 5 is a detailed plan view of the base member of the wig;
FIG. 6 is a detailed plan view of the base member, similar to FIG. 5, but showing another form ofconstruction; and
FIG. 7 is a detailed plan view of the base member, similar to FIGS. 5 and 6, but showing still another form of construction.
Referring to the drawings in further detail, as shown in FIG. 1, a wig indicated generally at 10 is mounted on the head 12 of a wearer. The hair 14 is fabricated from synthetic material, human hair or any other suitable fiber to portray a realistic or natural appearance by the wearer thereof. Preferably, the hair overlies the entire top 16 of the wearers head in order to conceal the wearers natural hair from view. This allows the wig 10 to be of any desirable color regardless of the wearer's natural hair coloring.
As best seen in FIG. 2, a base member 18 is utilized which has a generally hemispherical shape to encompass the head of the wearer. The base member has a first portion 20 and an oppositely disposed second portion 22. Any suitable means may be employed to removably secure the wig 10 to the wearers head such as a comb 24 pivotally secured to the first portion- 20 of the base member, and an identical comb 26 pivotally secured to the second portion 22 of the base member. Hence, it will be appreciated that the base member 18 is removably securable to the head 12 in a first position wherein the first portion 20 is disposed toward the front of the wearers head and in a second position wherein the second portion 22 is disposed toward the front of the wearers head for a purpose which will be described more fully hereinafter.
The base member may be fabricated from any suitable material such as cloth or nylon, for example. Preferably, the base material is rather porous, and contains a plurality of openings 28 to provide circulation for cooling the wearers head.
As is clearly seen in FIGS. 24. the hair 14 is secured to and distributed over the area of the outer surface of the base member 18, so as to overlie the top of the wearers head and conceal the natural hair from view. The hair is secured to the base member 18 in any suitable manner, such as by sewing layers of hair in rows thereto, for example. The rows may be transversely disposed, as at 30, FIG. 5, or the rows may be longitudinally disposed, as at 32, FIG. 6, for example. Then, too, the rows may be of circular configuration, as at 34, FIG. 7.
Referring particularly to FIGS. 3 and 4, the hair .14 is trimmed to a generally shorter length, as indicated at 36, toward the second portion 22 of the base member, and the hair is trimmed to a generally longer length, as indicated at 38, toward the first portion 20 of the base member. It will be particularly appreciated that when the wig is mounted on the wearers head with the first portion 20 toward the front of the wearers head, as seen in FIG. 3, the wearer exhibits a relatively short hair styling effect, and when the wig is mounted on a human head with the second portion 22 toward the front of the head, the wearer exhibits a relatively long hair styling effect. Any suitable means may be employed for trimming the hair in this manner such as securing hair, of equal length throughout, to the base member, mounting the base member on a human head or a facsimile thereof, preferably with the second portion of the base disposed toward the front of the head, and trimming the hair in a manner as normally employed by a barber. Alternatively, the hair may be cut to various lengths prior to being secured to the base member, and then the hair of longer length 38 is secured toward the first portion 20 of the base member and the hair of shorter length 36 is secured toward the second portion 22 of the base member.
It will thus be seen that the present invention does indeed provide an improved wig construction which is superior in simplicity, economy and appearance as compared to prior art wigs. In addition, a wig constructed in accordance with the concepts of our invention is particularly desirable, because it allows the wearer to employ a large number of different hair stylings without the necessity of carrying around additional hairpieces. It is cool and comfortable for the wearer, and presents a very pleasing appearance.
Although certain particular embodiments of the invention are herein disclosed for purposes of explanation, various modifications thereof, after study of this specification, will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains, and reference should accordingly be had to the appended claims in determining the scope of the invention.
LII
