(Cl. 13253) This invention relates to wig or hairpiece, and, more particularly, to a wig having a central opening therethrough with the wig portions having hair which is adapted to be intermingled with the natural hair of a wearer to supplement it in those areas which ordinarily require treatment for more sophisticated hair stylings.

As is perhaps well known, wigs are often worn by some women to permit ready application of hair styles and color preference without the need of recurring and lengthy visits to beauty parlors for hair styling changes or changes in the color of their hair. This invention relates to a wig for use by women which is in effect a partial wig or hair piece; it does not completely cover the head. It is provided with hair in an intensity pattern and length which adapts it for reasonably prompt styling and intermingling with the hair of the wearer. Specifically, the wig comprises a front portion and an elastic back band which are joined by side bands. To the exterior of the front portion and bands, hair is suitably fastened and arranged in a simulated growth pattern. The wig is adapted to be applied or arranged on the head of a wearer by positioning the portion on the top of the head at or above the natural hair line and by passing the hair of the wearer through the area defined by the bands and front portion so that the back elastic band is underneath the wearers hair and overlays the neck and the hair of the wig and the hair of the wearer may be intermingled and combed together.

Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a partial wig including a hirsute frontal portion and hirsute side bands connected at the distal ends by an elastic hirsute band which is adapted to overlie a portion of the head and is arranged to remain in position thereon.

It is another object of this invention to provide a partial wig having a hair pattern and hair length and intensity whereby it is adapted to be arranged on the head of a wearer so that the hair of the wig may be combed and intermingled with the natural hair of a wearer to supplement it in those areas where required for various hair stylings.

It is a general object of this invention to provide a wig of the type described hereinafter which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture in that it employs a reduced amount of hair, and which is well adapted for various types hair styling.

In accordance with these and other objects herein, the instant invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, and referring parice ticularly to FIG. 1, the numeral 11 generally represents a partial wig comprising a generally elliptically-shaped hirsute frontal portion or foundation 12 with diverging

In any conventional manner the exterior surfaces of the frontalportion and bands are provided with depending stranded hair 20 which is suitably fastened to the frontal portion and bands to give the illusion of natural hair when the partial wig is worn on a person.

The frontal portion 12 is generally elliptical in shape with the forward edge 22 adapted to be arranged so as to overlay the hairline of a wearer when in use to conform thereto and extend substantially to the temple portions of the wearers head. The rearward edge 24 is adapted to overlay the top of the head in a transverse direction along a line spaced rearwardly from the forward edge or hairline edge. The frontal portion may be of a coarsely woven and stiffened fabric material such as 26 (FIGURE 4) and which is adapted to be shaped so as to engage the frontal portion of a persons head with the side bands extending downwardly and rearwardly adjacent the ears of a human head in a path which generally follows that of the hairline. As can be seen in FIGS. 3 and 5, a generally transverse but slightly bowed first ribbon 28 extending along a line parallel to the major axis of the elliptical portion may be provided to form a longitudinal pocket in which a thin stiffening wire 29 shown in dotted lines is disposed. 37 and 39 are provided. The material of the frontal portion and side bands is preferably what is known in the art as a vegetable net; however, buckram or any other suitable material may be used. In a preferred embodiment of the instant invention strands of hair 20 are doubled over to form a bight portion 41 which is attached to the base or in what is known as a ventilating stitch in a suitable intensity pattern. The strands of hair are applied to the elliptical portion in any suitable pattern. It has been found that for best effect it is preferred that the hair in the region adjacent the rearward edge 24 is preferably longer than the hair in the region adjacent the forward edge, but is of less intensity; that is, the number of hairs per square inch is greater in the region adjacent the forward edge than in the region adjacent the rearward edge. This is to provide body and substance for working a suitable hair styling along the front hairline and to permit a fanning out or their covering of the top of the head by combing of the longer hair. The hair is also applied to the side bands in a suitable manner; however, it is obvious that this hair is generally shorter than that of the other portions of the wig. The elastic :back band or other suitable adjustable band for connecting the distal ends is provided with air which is adapted to fall in a downward direction when on the wearer. In the embodiment shown, an elastic strip has been disposed within a puckered ribbon-like envelope, the one outer surface edge of which is hirsute.

In use and with reference to FIG. 1, the partial wig may be positioned on the head of the wearer with the forward edge spaced rearwardly from the natural hairline and with the elastic rear band arranged to overlay the back of the neck of the wearer with the wearers natural hair being passed through the opening between the bands and frontal portion. The wig is then blended with the wearers hair by combing the hair of the region adjacent the forward edge forwardly and intermingling it by combing with the normal front hair designated 44 of the wearer and the longer strands of hair in the region adjacent the rearward edge being combed rearwardly so as to over-lay and be of a predominant effect in the appearance of the hair on the top of the head. Alternatively, and preferred by some wearers, the wig may be positioned so that the forward edge is coincident with the hairline. In such a use of the partial wig the application to the head and arrangement thereon is substantially the same.

It will be apparent that the instant invention provides a wig, the hair of which is adapted to be intermingled with the natural hair of a wearer and which is intended to supplement the wearers hair in those areas only which ordinarily require extensive treatment in order for more sophisticated hair stylings. The top portion of the head is not confined under a continuous cover but is permitted to be exposed to the atmosphere for a maximum amount of comfort to the wig wearer.

While the instant invention has been shown and described herein in what is conceived to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is recognized that departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the invention, which is therefore not to be limited to the details disclosed herein but is to be accorded the full scope of the claims so as to embrace any and all equivalent apparatus and articles.

What is claimed is:

1. A partial wig comprising a foundation of flexible sheet material generally elliptical in outline and having front and rear boundary edges approaching one another at the ends of the major axis of the ellipse, to form side bands as extension of said major axis, a relatively narrow back band having its ends attached respectively to the ends of said side bands and forming continuations thereof, and hair secured to and distributed over the area of the outer surface of said foundation, said major axis and side bands having a cumulative length substantially equal to the distance between temple portions, measured over the top of a wearers head.

2. The wig of claim 1, said foundation being of flexible fabric generally conforming to the shape of the top frontal portion of a human head, said rear boundary edge extending over the top of the head, between temple portions thereof, when said front boundary edge is in general registration with the front hair (line, said back band extending downwardly and rearwardly to encompass the lower rear portions of the head, whereby to positively secure said foundation in position, as aforesaid.

3. The wig of claim 2, a first ribbon secured to the inner surface of said foundation in generally parallel spaced relation with said major axis, and having its ends terminating at said front boundary edge adjacent the ends thereof, and a flexible stiffening wire coextensive with said first ribbon and secured in place between said first ribbon and said foundation.

The wig of claim 3, and second and third ribbons each secured to the inner surface of said foundation and extending from a common point midway of the length of said front boundary edge, rearwardly to respective points of intersection with said rear boundary edge, said second and third'ribbons making equal angles with and one respectively opposite sides of the minor axis of said elliptical foundation, and a pair of flexible stiffening wires each secured in place between said foundation and a respective one of said second and third ribbons.

5. A partial wig as set forth in claim 2 the number of hairs per unit area of foundation in the region adjacent said front boundary edge is greater than the number of hairs per like unit area in the region adjacent said rear boundary edge.

6. A partial wig as set forth in claim 5, the hair in the region adjacent said rear boundary edge is longer than the hair in the region adjacent said front boundary edge.

7. The wig of claim 1, and hair secured to and covering the outer surface of said back band, in substantially uniform distribution over the area thereof.

8. A partial wig as set forth in claim 1 wherein the said back band includes adjustable means for adjusting the length of said back band.

9. A partial wig as set forth in claim 1 wherein the said back band is of elastic material.

In a wig, a generally elliptical foundation of flexible material having a front boundary edge adapted to overlie and extend rearwardly along front hairline of a wearer and a rear boundary edge passing over the top of the head of the wearer, said edges conflowing at the ends thereof to form side hands a rear band connecting the distal ends of said side bands to define an open center portion through which the natural hair of the wearer may be passed, and hair secured to and covering the outer surface of said foundation, in substantially uniform distribution thereover.

Claims

1. A PARTIAL WIG COMPRISING A FOUNDATION OF FLEXIBLE SHEET MATERIAL GENERALLY ELLIPTICAL IN OUTLINE AND HAVING FRONT AND REAR BOUNDARY EDGES APPROACHING ONE ANOTHER AT THE ENDS OF THE MAJOR AXIS OF THE ELLIPSE, TO FORM SIDE BANDS AS EXTENSION OF SAID MAJOR AXIS, A RELATIVELY NARROW BACK BAND HAVING ITS ENDS ATTACHED RESPECTIVELY TO THE ENDS OF SAID SIDE BANDS AND FORMING CONTINUATIONS THEREOF, AND HAIR SECURED TO AND DISTRIBUTED OVER THE AREA OF THE OUTER SURFACE OF SAID FOUNDATION, SAID MAJOR AXIS AND
