UNIT D STATES JOHN E. BOOTH, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
.MOCCASIN SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 355,755, dated January 11, 1887.
Application filed September 8, 1886. 7 Serial No. 212,982. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. Roo'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Moccasin-Tip; and I do hereby declare that the following is a-fnll, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved tip for moccasins and moccasin slippers,-and is illustrated in the accompanying dr awings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a moccasin slipper with my tip. Fig.2 is a plan or pattern of my tip.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the figures- My invention is applicable to all moccasins or moccasin slippers havingthe bottom turned up around the edges of the foot and a tongueshaped tip stitched to the bottom and covering the. instep of the foot. In-such moccasins the strain when in use comes upon the stitching which secures the tip to the bottom, and more especially upon the extremities of the seam at the rear end of the tip, where it is so severe that ripping cannot be prevented ex cept by the aid of metallic braces or some such device. It is to remove all strain 'fromthis seam uniting the top and bottom of the moccasin and thus prevent its ripping, and to dis pense with the use of braces in this connection that I have invented my form of tip.
I form my tip in all respects like the common tongueshaped tip, and slitted in the same manner over the instep for the introduction of i. the foot, but with the addition of thelappets or ears a a at the rear extremity of each side. The tip A is stitched to the bottom B, as usual, and the seam 00 carried back as far as the lappets at a, which are lapped over the upper. edge of the bottom B and secured thereto by rivets, stitches, or other appropriate device. The strain otherwise falling upon the seam x is thus entirely removed therefrom and thrown uponand borne by the lappets a a and bottom B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- is- In combination with the bottom of a moccasin when formed to turn up around the edges of the'foot, a tip having at the rear extremity of each side an ear or lappet of sufficient length to lap over the upper edge of the bottom of the moccasin and to be riveted or otherwise secured thereto, substantially as de- JOHN E. BOOTH.
