JOSEPH MARX AND JOSEPH H. MUELLER, OF GROSS PLAINS, VVISOONSIN.
WAGON-BOX. LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,459, dated January 4, 1887.
Application filed October 25, 1886. Serial No. 217,128. (Nomodeh) To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, JOSEPH MARX and JosEPH H. MUELLER, both of Cross Plains, in the county of Dane and State of VVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Vagon- Box Look, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1. is an end View of a Wagon-box with our improved lock applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lock detached from the wagonboX; and Fig.3 is a plan view of a portion of awagonboX, showing the lock in position for removal from the box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and efficient fastening or look for the end-gates of wagon-boxes, which may be quickly applied and readily removed.
Our invention consists in two T-headed rods pivoted tothe ends of the shorter arms of a T-lever, and a pawl connected with the longer arm of the T-lever, adapted to engage notches in one of the T-headed rods, all as hereinafter more fully described.
The rods A B are provided at their outer ends with T-sha'ped heads a, and are pivoted at their inner ends to the shorter arms I) b of the T-shaped three-armed lever G. The lever O is arranged to swingin a plane at right angles to the 'heads a, and to thelonger arm of the lever G is pivoted a pawl, 0, having at its free end an eye, (I, which surrounds the rod A, and is adapted to engage a series of ratchetteeth, 6, formed on the edge of'therod.
In the cleatsf of the end-gate D, and in the sides of the wagon-box,are formed mortisesg, (shown in dotted linesin Fig. 1,) through which the heads a of the rods A B may be passed. The sides of the wagon-box are provided with plates h, having apertures corresponding to the mortises g, for receiving the pressure of the heads a.
wagon-box.
through the mortise g, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3,'until the head a of the rod A can be inserted in the mortises g of the opposite side of the end-gate of the wagon-box, when the lock is slidin the opposite direction, bringing the heads a on opposite sides of the The lever O is then turned down 1 into a vertical position, bringing the heads a at right angles to the mortises g. The leverO is then swung around so as to draw the ends of the rods A B together, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus clamping the sides of the wagon-box firmly against the ends of the end gate. The pawl c engages the ratchet-teeth e of the rod A'and holds the lever O in the position in which it is placed. When it is desired to unfasten the end-gate, the pawl c is disengaged from the ratchet-teeth e, and the rods A B are removedfrom the mortises by reversingthe operation just described.
The device which we have described in connection with theend-gates of wagons mm appliedto the straining of saw-frames.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of therod A, provided with the T-shaped head a and ratchet-teeth e, the rod B, provided with the T-shapedv head a, the T-shaped lever O, pivotally connected with the rods A B, and the pawl c, pivoted to the lever O and adapted to engage the ratchet-teeth e, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the wagon-box and end-gate providedwith mortises g and plates h, of the rod A,provided with the head a and ratchet-teeth e, the rod B,provided with the head a, the T-shaped lever G, pivotally connected with the rods A B, and the pawl c, pivoted to the lever O and adapted to engage the ratchet'teeth e, substantially as described.
JOSEPH MARX. JOSEPH H. MUELLER.
