EN D-GATE FOR WAGON-BODIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,886, dated January 12, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIS BUESING and HERMAN F. BUESING, both citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Vaverly, in the county of Bremer and State of Iowa, have invented an Improvement in \Vagon End-Gates and shoveling-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of devices for which a concurrent application was filed January 28, 1890, Serial No. 379,459, and has for its object the provision of improved means for connecting the main and supplemental end-gates and to cheapen the construction and increase the effectiveness and convenience of the locking and adjusting devices.
Our invention consists, primarily, in the construction and combination, with the endgate formed of two sections, of a locking de vice composed of two levers pivoted, respectively, 011 the upper and lower sections of the end-gate and engaging with each other, which levers are normally held in contact with hooks secured to the sides of the wagon-box and projecting through the end-gate by yielding pressure secured to the lower section of the end-gate and impinging against the lower lever.
Our invention consists, further, in certain details of construction hereinafter clearly set forth, pointed out in our claims, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear end view showing our devices attached to wagon-box, the end-gate being closed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central sectional view showing the end-gate depending from the box. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the end-gate in position to be used as a shoveling-board. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the manner in which the levers on the main end-gate engage those on the upper or supplemental end-gate.

The rear end of the bottom 1 of the box is A wooden bar 5 is fixed tov thereof a short distance in advance of the rear end thereof.
As the hinge and locking mechanisms on both sides of the end-gate and wagon-box are alike, we will limit our description to the devices on one side only. A metal plate 6 is fixed to the outer side of the rear end portion of the side 2 of the box by means of screws, bolts, or rivets. A hook 7 is formed on the upper end of this plate 6, which rests in a notch in the upper edge of the side 2 of the box, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. A projection 8 is formed integral with the plate 6, and extends downward therefrom through a perforation in the bar 5. This projection 8 is screw-threaded to permit of a nut being placed thereon to hold the parts closely bound together. This plate 6 has a perforated ear 9 formed integral therewith and projecting rearward therefrom, which forms one member of the hinge, by which the end-gate is secured to the wagon-box.
The end-gate is formed of two sections, the lower one 10 being beveled 011 its lower edge, and has a metal plate 11 secured in a rabbet formed on the long side thereof. This section of the end-gate has a metal plate 12 secured thereto, which plate has two downwardly-extending cars 13, formed integral therewith and mating with the ear 9 on the plate 6 to form the other member of the hinge before mentioned. The cars are provided with perforations coinciding with the perforations in the ear 9 to admit the hinge-bolt 14 therein. A projection 15 is formed integral with the outer one of the cars 13 and the plate 12 and in the same plane with the said ear, which projection is provided with an elongated slot, for a purpose that will hereinafter be made plain.
A metal plate 16 is secured to the section 10 of the end-gate above the plate 12, and has a concavo-convex portion 17 formed therein, adapted to admit the upper end of said plate 12 and the lower end of a bar 18, which lat-- ter is secured to the section 10 of the end gate and is used as a splice-bar to connect the two sections of the gate. Aconcavo-convex portion 20 is formed in the upper portion of the plate 16, extending transversely thereof.
This portion 20 of the plate 16 has a slot formed therein on each side thereof at the point of juncture with the plate 16 to admit a lever to be passed therethrough. An car 21 is formed integral with and projects at right angles from the plate 16 near the upper end thereof, and has a slot formed therein, for a purpose hereinafter made plain. The bar or plate 18 has an ear 22 formed integral therewith and projecting at right angles therefrom, which car has a perforation therein. This bar 18 also has a slotted integral projection 23 extending therefrom in thesame plane therewith. This plate or bar 18 also has a concavo convex portion 24 formed thereon, which is provided with slots in each of its sides at the point of juncture with the bar for the purpose of admitting a lever therein, thereby forming a strap or loop to confine said lever.
A lever 25 is pivoted on the plate 10, and the upper end thereof is confined within the loop formed by the loop and engages with a hook 26, which is passed through coinciding perforations in the plate 16 and the section 10 of the end-gate. The hook 26 is formed integral with and projecting from a plate 27, which latter is secured to the inner face of the side 2 of the box. This plate 27 has a screw-threaded portion extending downward v therefrom through coinciding perforations in the bottom 1 of the box and the bar 5 and is secured by a nut. A hook 28 is formed on the upper end of the plate 27 and rests in a notch in the top edge of the side 2 of the box. The lever is forked or bifurcated at its upper end and engages with the lower end of a lever 29, which latter is pivoted on the bar 18, and its upper end portion engages with a hook 30, which hook faces in direction opposite to hook 26. The upper end portion of the lever 29 is confined within the-loop 24 and moves back and forth therein. The hook 30 is formed integral with a plate 31, fixed to the side-board 3 of the wagon-box and projects through coinciding perforations in the projection 23 and the member 19 of the end-gate.
A plate 32 is secured to the section 10 of the end-gate in juxtaposition to and in alignment with the loop 20. This plate has a cylindrical projection 33 formed on its outer face longitudinally thereof. The rear end of this projection 33 is closed and a spring 34 is inserted therein, one end impinging against the closed end of the projection, and the other end impinging against a shoulder formed on a plunger-bolt 35, which is inclosed by the projection and spring and reciprocates within said projection. The outer end of this bolt 35 is passed through an opening in the end of the loop 20 and engages with the upper end of the lever 25 and, aided by the resilience of the spring 34, holds the levers 25 and 28 in engagement with their respective hooks 26 v and 30.
cured to the section 19 of the end-gate and engages with the notched plate 36 to hold the two sections of the end-gate together. The lower end of this spring 37 isbeveled,in order that it may automatically ride over the plate 36 when the section 19 of the gate is being placed in position.
A sheet-metal shield or side-board 38 is hinged to the side of the end-gate by means of hooked straps 39, 40, and 41, which are secured to said shield and engage in the openings in the cars 15, 21, and 22. The strap 41 is arc-shaped and is provided with a slot to admit a T-headed bolt 42, which is removably secured to a strap 43, which latter is fixed to the side-board 3 of the wagon-box and overlaps the side 2 thereof.
A clip or guide-piece 44 is fixed to the outer side of the side 2 of the wagon-box to confine the strap 41 when the end-gate is closed.
Many of the parts of our device which are stated as being formed integral with each other may be made separately and secured together by rivets or screws, it so desired.
In the practical operation of our device, the T-headed bolt 42 being capable of being rotated, it may be turned so that the head is in alignment with the slot in the strap 41, and the shield readily disengaged therefrom and removed from the end-gate.
To unlock the gate the lower ends of the levers 25 should be moved horizontally away from each other, thus disengaging the upper end portions thereof fromthe hooks 2G, and also actuating the levers 28 and disengaging them from the hooks 30.
1V e claim as our invention- 1. In combination with a wagon end-gate, a supplemental end-gate connected thereto by means of a T-headed leaf-spring engaging a notched plate in the end-gate and having pivoted approximately at each of its end portions a lever adapted to engage a hook attached to the wagon-box and having its lower end adapted to be operated by a lever attached to the end-gate, substantially as shown and described, to operate as set forth.
2. The combination, in a wagon end-gate, of two levers adapted to be independently operated and to be pivotally connected to the said end-gate, their top portions being adapted to engage hooks which are attached to the wagon-box and project through the end-gate, and said levers being adapted to be normally held in engagement with said hook by means of bolts 35 in the bores of the plates 32, which bolts are actuated by means of coil-springs, substantially as shown and described, to operate in the manner set forth.
3. The combination, in a wagon end-gate, of the main' gate 10, the supplemental end gate 19, detachably connected with the said main gate, and two independent sets of levers pivoted approximately to the ends of the gates, the lower levers of the said set being connected to the main end-gate and have their upper ends bifurcated to admit the handles of the levers on the supplemental gate and have yielding pressure in engagement therewith approximately at their top portions to normally press them outward, as required, to hold both the upper and lower levers in engagement with their respective hooks when the end-gate is closed.

An improved end-gate and shovelingboard having a hinged connection with a wagon-box, side pieces formed in the segment of a circle and adapted to overlap the sides of the wagon-box and having a slot near its outer edge adapted to admit a T-headed bolt to be extended therethrough and attached to the wagon-box, as required, to retain the said side pieces in proper position relative to the I said box, and two independent sets of levers f ulcrumed to the main and supplemental endgates and adapted to engage hooks which prosection, as shown and described.
