WAGON-TONGUE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, AUGUST LINDBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Melvin, in the county of Osceola and State wagons, that is to the device for securing the tongue to the wagon hounds, and the object of the invention is to provide an adjustable device of the class mentioned, by means of which the tongue may be secured to the hounds of any wagon. In wagons of different sizes or makes the wagon hounds are fixed at various angles and the tongue hounds which are secured thereto must be parallel therewith.

In the usual construction, the tongue hounds are made in one piece or are arranged in fixed relation to each other, in which case they are adapted to be secured to such wagons only in which the wagon hounds are at substantially the same angle as the tongue hounds and at the same distance apart. By equipping the wagon tongue with adjustable hounds the same may be secured or attached to the hounds of practically any wagon.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby a tongue may be easily and quickly attached to the tongue hounds without the necessity of employing a skilled mechanic, so that broken tongues may be readily and quickl replaced and tongues of various sizes easily and quickly positioned.

Vith the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

upon which is positioned the usual sand board 2 and 3 the sand board plate upon which the plate of the bolster, not shown, is adapted to rest. The numerals 4t and 5 designate the tongue hounds of the device. Each of these tongue hounds are of a precisely similar construction comprising substantially U-shaped members of a sufficient length and the top and bottom plates of the members are provided with suitable openings adjacent the ends of the hounds. The openings positioned adjacent the rear ends of the tongue hounds 4i and 5 are adapted for the reception of a suitable removable bolt 5, the said bolt adapted to engage with an eye provided upon a link 6. The opening upon the opposite or forward end of the hounds is adapted for the reception of a similar bolt 7 whiclf also engages an eye carried by a shorter link 8.

The numeral 9 designates the tongue of the wagon. This tongue is of the ordinary construction being provided with the usual hammer strap 10 and the said tongue is adapted to be engaged by the forward and rear sleeve members 11 and 12. Each of the sleeves 11 and 12 comprises a pair of substantially U-shaped members designated by the numerals l3 and 14. The U-shaped members 13 and 14 provided by the rear sleeve 12 are provided with suitable perforated ears 15 adjacent their offset meeting edges, and the said ears are adapted for the reception of suitable removable securing elements 16. The members 13 and 14 are provided upon their connecting face or portion with integrally formed ears 17, the latter being adapted for the reception of a removable bolt 18, whereby the end of the link 6 opposite to that engaged by the bolt 5 is hingedly connected with the said members l3 and 14. The members 13 and 141 are each provided with forwardly extending plates 19 and these plates have their inner faces serrated as designated by the numeral 20. The plates 19 are provided with suitable ears 21, the latter being adapted for the reception of pintles 22 connected with a threaded rod 28. The links 6 are also provided with suitable ears 24, the same being adapted for offset pivots 25 provided upon a threaded rod 26. The rods 23 and 26 have their threads pitched in opposite directions, and engaging these threaded rods is a thimble 27, the latter having its bore provided with threads of an opposite pitch, and by Patented J 11116 21, 1910.

this arrangement it will be noted that as the thimble or turnbuckle 27 is rotated upon the rods the hounds 4 and 5 adjacent the rear portion of the device are swung upon their pivots or bolts 7 either toward or away from the tongue 9. In order to securely retain the hounds 4 and 5 in their swung position, I have provided the threaded bolt 26 with a nut lock 28.

The U-shaped members 13 and 14 comprising the sleeve 11 have both their offset portions provided with ears 29, the same having alining openings adapted for the reception of removable bolt members 30. Connecting portions or sides of the said members 13 and 14 are provided with suitable offset cars 31, the latter having suitable openings adapted for the reception of a removable pintle 32, whereby the end of the link 8, opposite to that engaged byv the pintle 7 is hingedly connected with the said ears 31. The connecting member or face of the elements 13 and 14 are each provided with rearwardly extending plates 33 and forwardly extending plates 34. Both of these plates have their inner faces serrated as designated by the numerals 35 and 36,

V and the rearwardly extending plate 33 is provided with suitable ears 37 the same being adapted for the reception of offset pintles provided upon a threaded bolt 39. Pivotally connected, as at 40 with the link 8 is a bolt member 41, and the threads of this bolt member are arranged at an opposite pitch to that of the bolt member 39, while connecting both the bolts 39 and 41 is a thimble 42. The thimble 42 has its bore provided with oppositely pitched threads, so that it will be readily noted that as the sleeve or turnbuckle 42 is rotated the forward end of the hounds 4 and 5 are readily sleeves 11 and 12, and after the members comprising the said sleeves are again tightened through the medium of the bolt members 16 and 30 the toothed plates 20, 33 and 34 are forced into eng'a 'ement with the sides of the said tongue t rough the medium of the turnbuckles 27 and 42, thus entirely obviating the necessity of the employment of bolts or analogous devices for securing the tongue to its hounds. The tongue 9 is provided with the usual transverse opening which is adapted for the reception of a connecting bolt 43, and the sides of the tongue hounds 4 and 5 as well as the sides of the wagon hounds 1 are provided with alining openings through which the said bolt 43 extends. The cross sectionally U-shaped tongue hounds 4 and 5 are each provided with a reinforcing block 44, the latter being also provided with an opening alining with the openings adapted for the reception of the bolt 43, and the said bolt 43 not only serves to reinforce the securing plates 20, 33 and 34, but also connects the tongue hounds to the wagon.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.
