To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MCWIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lost Cabin, in the county of Fre mont and Stateof Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Tongue Hounds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n wagons and more particularly to the con struction of the fore hounds thereof.
The object in view is the provision of means enabling the application of tongues of various sizes to wagons of different makes.
WVith this and further objects in view, as will in part hereinafter become apparent and in part be stated, the invention comprises tongue hounds adapted to be fitted between the fore hounds of a wagon, cross braces adjustably connecting the tongue hounds, and adjustable links also connecting the hounds for spacing the same at variable distances, the said cross braces and links being adapted to be connected to a tongue.
The invention also comprises certain other novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a top plan view of a fragment of a wagon structure illustrating the embodiment of the invention, parts being seen in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a transverse, vertical section taken on the plane indicated by line 22 of Fig. 1, the wagon hounds being omitted. Fig. 3 is an enlarged, detail, fragmentary section taken approximately on the plane indicated by line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 44 of Fig. 3, parts being seen in elevation.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1, 1 indicate the fore hounds of a wagon fitted to which are the tongue hounds 2, 2, each of the latter being preferably in the form of a channel beam or bar having a vertical web fitted flat against the adjacent vertical face of the respective hound 1. A- tongue 3 is disposed between the hounds 2 and connected thereto by cross braces 4, 4 and by links 5, 5. Each of the cross braces '4 has its outer end terminating in an eye 6 disposed between the horizontal flanges of the respective hound 2 and connected thereto by a pivot bolt 7. The inner end portions of the braces 4 extend through an aperture in the tongue 3 and lap therein and extend preferably to the relatively opposite sides ofthe tongue through the aperture. A' preferably metallic sleeve 8 surrounds the tongue 3 at the place of the aperture for accommodating the cross braces 4, the sleeve 8 being formed with lateral apertures registering with the aperture of the tongue and also accommodating the cross braces 4 which extendthrough the apertures of the sleeve.
A bolt or set screw 9 is threaded through the sleeve 8 and through the material ofthe up per portion of the tongue into engagementwith the uppermost cross brace 4. The contiguous faces of the braces 4 are preferably serrated, as indicated at 10, aud t-he bolt 9 is adapted to press the cross braces together for maintaining the interlocked condition of the serrations whereby the cross braces 4 are held rigidly connected and at the same time .rigidly adjustable longitudinally for varying the relative distance apart of the hounds 2, and their relative inclination wlth re- "spect to the longitudinal axis of the tongue.
Adjacent the forward ends of the hounds 2 each of the same is engaged by a pair of the links 5, the outer ends of said links being pivoted to the respective hound by a bolt 11 extending through the lapping ends of the links and through the horizontal flanges of the hound, and the inner end of each rear link 5 is pivotally connected by a pivot bolt 12 to a bracket 13, each forward link 5 being likewise pivotally connected by a bolt 14 to a forward bracket 15. The brackets 13 are connected to the tongue 3 by through bolts 16, and the brackets 15 are connected to the tongue 3 by similar through bolts 17 A main bolt 18 which connects the tongue with the wagon extends through the outer end portions of the hounds 1 and through appropriate apertures in the vertical webs of the hounds 2 and through the tongue 3 in the necessity therefor, the present invention 1 justment of the hounds 2, the hounds being,
