ADJUSTABLE BEAGE AND Application filed. December 8, 1923. Serial No. 678,919.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cnovrs M. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Booneville in the county of Prentiss and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful improven'ients in Adjustable Braces and Sweeps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to n eke and use, the same.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a sweep for plows which is adjustable within certain limits to adapt the spread of the blades to the particular nature of work, thereby obviating the necessity of changing or replacing the same.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an adjustable sweep and brace embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a side view thereof,
Figure 3 is a front view of the sweep,
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 4c4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The adjustable sweep comprises a longitudinally disposed frame bar 1 having a loop 2 at its rear end, a forwardly and downwardly inclined shank 3, and a crosshead 4 at its front end, said crosshead having forwardly disposed cheeks 5 at its ends to which blades 6 are pivotally connected, said blades and checks having matching knuckles which receive pintles 7 in the nature of bolts whereby the blades may be readily detached when required to be sharpened or replaced when worn. The inclined shank 3 and crosshead 1 provide a seat to re ceive the plow stock or standard (not shown) in a manner well understood. The cheeks 5 are adapted to embrace opposite sides of the plow stock and the shovel blade attached thereto. The opening 8 provided in the crosshead 4 is adapted to receive the usual U-bolt whereby the sweep is attached to the plow stock or standard. Each of the blades 6 is provided near its rear end with an inwardly disposed lug 9 which is aper tured to receive a pivot stud 10 at the outer end of a brace 11, the pivot stud being retained in place by means of a cotter pin 12. The inner portions of the braces 11 overlap and are provided in their length with a plurality of openings 13. Each of the braces 11 has a terminal stud 14, the one facing upwardly and the other downwardly whereby to enter the openings in the respective braces, as shown most clearly in Figure 5. The overlapped portions of the braces 11 pass through the loop 2 and are clamped by means of a set screw 15 which is fitted in one of a series of threaded openings 16 formed in the upper portion of the loop. Each of the braces 11 has three openings 13 and there are three stages of adjustment of the blades 6. The relative position of the braces depends upon the spread of the blades 6 at their rear ends, and since, as stated, the blades have three adjustments, the braces will occupy one of three positions, hence the provision of the three openings 16 in the loop 2, whereby the setscrew 15 may be positioned to engage the braces and secure them and the sweep in the required adjusted posi tion. The braces 11 are offset at their outer ends in a downward direction and as a result the overlapped portions of the braces are elevated so as to clear the loose ground and grubs.
What is claimed is:
1. A plow sweep comprising a frame bar having a loop at its rear end, blades pivoted at their front ends to the front of the frame bar and adjustable laterally at their rear ends, braces extending inwardly from the rear ends of the blades and overlapping and inserted in said loop, and a set screw adjustable in the length of the loop and adapted to clamp the overlapped portions of the braces and secure them to the frame bar in the required adjusted position.
2. A plow sweep comprising a longitudinally disposed frame bar having a loop at its rear end and a forwardly and downwardans-.1
iy inciined portion at its front terminating in cheeks, the upper portion 05' the loop being provided with a plurality of threaded openings, blades pivoted to said cheeks and having inwardiy disposed lugs at their rear ends, braces having their outer ends ofiset downwardly and provided with pivot studs engaging the lugs of the blades, said braces having their inner ends overlapping and passing through the loop at the rear end of the frame bar. said braces having openings loop and secure the braces and blades in the 15 required adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I 2% my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
