INVENTOR. MARTIN SCLIOELLHORN GEORG SCH FFLER Attorney i 1 SCRAP BALING PRESS TRUCK This invention relates to ascrap-baling press truck for baling large pieces of scrap material such as automobiles;
More specifically, this invention relates to a scrap baling apparatus, wherein the truck has the dimension and weight of a conventional truck, so as to meet legally acceptable road traffic requirements. f
All equipment known in the prior art which may be used for the purposes set forth in this invention are of such dimensions that they can only be transported on special vehicles. These known vehicles require a special license for public traffic. In addition, such equipment is very expensive and difficult to 'handle in traffic.
Accordingly, this invention provides a scrap-baling press truck having apressing trough which is located across the chassis platform of the truck. The openfside of the pressing trough is so dimensioned thatlarge pieces of scrap material may be gradually fed into the pressinglequipment. The scrap baling press truck is also capable of pressing individual sec tions of large pieces of'scrap material'such as automobiles. This capability requires relatively small pressing forces so that a small dimensioned pressing trough is completely adequate. In addition, lighter duty press plates and hydraulic operation means are adequate for'the apparatus.
This invention also provides a scrap-balingpress'truck having folding working platforms arranged at. either side of the pressing trough. These folding platforms can fold up during transit and include prop wheel attachments which support them once they are unfolded, Theplatforms in their folded position form a pathway which includesthe pressing trough and may be tilted upward, or downward during the step-bystep travel of the scrapped bale. This enables large pieces of scrap material to be fed into the pressing trough from the beginning to the end of thebaling process.
In an improved embodiment, a-lever arm is mounted on the lower portion of the truck platform for tilting the working platforms upward or downward. A pistonrod of a hydraulic cylinder, which is supported by the chassis, is pivotably connected with the lever arm at the pivot point of theplatforms. Connecting rods are provided to connect the pivot point of the platforms providing an auxiliary scrap-baling receiving means. The lever arm and the connecting rod, permit a 90 angular tilting of the platforms. The, scrappedbale, which first is pressed in its centerportion, and which is about one-third of its total length, can then be reciprocated on and along the trough on the bottomof the truck to subsequently press its front and rear portions. J-
The actuating pistons for the press" plates are mounted below the pressing trough, the press-plates being mounted parallel with respect to the wheel axis of the truck. This necessarily provides a low'structure for providing a compactness to the vehicle during transit. A loading crane is further provided behind the cab of the truck which has an unrestricted movement during loading. This capability of unrestricted movement is due to the structural characteristics of the baling press equipment into which the large pieces of scrap material are being placed. Since the two auxiliary platform means have an additional function, namely, to serve as feeder means for the piece to be pressed, the loading crane with its associated press means are thus relieved of the load, and the pressing operation can be accelerated. The auxiliary receiving means for the scrap baling reduces the pressing time considerably, so as to considerably increase the output. The particular arrangement of the pressing equipment enables the structure of the loading crane to have a considerably shorter length than any of the known prior art structures now available.
It is therefore an object according to' the present invention to provide a scrap-baling press apparatus which can be mounted on a truck and capable of pressing large scrap materials such as automobiles. I
It is another object according to the present invention to provide a scrap-baling press truck which is capable of handling large scrap materials under normal road conditions and regulations.
It is still a further object according to the invention to provide a scrap-baling press truck which is simple in design, effcient, and reliable in operation.
Other objects and features of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings which disclose the embodiments of the invention. It is to be understood, however, that the drawings are designed for the purpose of illustration only, and not as a definition of the limits of the invention.
In the drawings, wherein similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a truck incorporating the invention of this disclosure;
FIG. 2 is a rear view of the truck incorporating the invention of this disclosure, shown in operating position; and
FIGS. 3 and 4 are scaled down views of FIG. 2, showing the different positions of the piece to be pressed during the operation of the device.
Referring to FIGS. l-4, there is shown a truck including a chassis l mounted on wheels 2 and carrying a drivers cab 3. An open, U-shaped pressing trough 4 is disposed across the truck platform. A set of press plates 6 are mounted on shafts 5 and will fold over pressing trough 4 as shown by the broken lines of FIG. I. The axes 5 of plates 6 are mounted generally parallel to the axes of truck wheels 2. Pressing plates 6 are fitted with bell crank-type levers 7. Bell cranktype levers 7 are connected to piston rods 8 whichare mounted in hydraulic cylinders 10. This forms a plate-operating mechanism. This mechanism moves the pressing plate in and out of a scrap pressing position. Piston rods 8 and hydraulic cylinders 10 are mounted below pressing trough 4 and pivotably anchored by mounting means 9. i
The practicability of such a truck for moving in transit is clearly exemplified by the compactness of the superstructure. As an example, a truck that has been readied to move may have its full height reduced to about 3.55 meters and its width reduced to about 2.38 meters and a loading platform height of about 1.52 meters.
While only a few embodiments of the present invention have been shown and described, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made thereunto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
