Abstract

947,519. Consolidating scrap metal; shearing. J. H. DUNLOP. (G. Maddox). April 11, 1960, No. 12927/60. Headings B3H and B3W. [Also in Division B5] Car bodies are baled for scrap in apparatus mounted for mobility, by being crushed in sequence in three directions at right angles. The apparatus may also operate on scrap &c. The apparatus may be mounted on a trailer 30 and comprises opposed walls 70, 72 hinged to a platform 50 at their lower edges and movable towards one another by hydraulic rams 86, 88. The upper edges carry shearing blades 100, 102. A car body 104 is positioned by a derrick 36 with its length transverse to the trailer and chassis 106 uppermost, the body then lying between the plates in their open position of Fig. 7. The plates are brought parallel to each other by the rams, crushing the body longitudinally and shearing it away from the chassis. Detachment of the chassis is facilitated by bars 108, 112 movable vertically by rams 110, 114. The plates open slightly to allow the body to drop to the platform 50 and close again, latches (Fig. 11, not shown) retaining them in parallel position. Plates 132, 134 swinging about axes 176 transverse to the trailer, are operated by rams 146, 178 to compress the body against the platform, these plates being finally locked in horizontal position by bolts extended by hydraulic cylinders 188 into apertures in the plates 70, 72 (Figs. 6, 10). Final compression along the trailer length is then carried out by a ram 210 advanced by cylinders 212. The plates 70, 72 and 132, 134 now return to their original position and a telescoping ram 248 mounted on a plate 220 pivoted in the platform 50 (Fig. 17) raises the bale 217 to a door 254 forming part of the plate 70 which pivots open to serve as a discharge shoot. Means is provided to lubricate the surfaces of the plates 70, 72, 132, 134. In an alternative form (Figs. 23, 24, not shown), the shear blades are wider and are hinged to the plates 70, 72 so that shearing may commence earlier in the compression stage, and the blades may pivot upwards during the final movement of the plates. A retractable table 40 capable of being erected to one side of the trailer (Figs. 1, 3) carries an hydraulically operated shears for cutting the chassis into convenient sections. The shears may have two cutting edges 402, 404 at right angles to render less movement of the chassis 106 necessary during cutting. A winch 30 for pulling cars to the baler is provided.
