No. 355,270. Patented Dec. 28, 1886.

PRICE JOHNSON, OF IIIITSONVILLE, ILLINOIS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 355,270, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed March 18,1886. Serial 9.195.682. gNo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PRICE JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hutsonville, in the county of Crawford and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art. to which it appertains to make and use the same, referenee being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thercomwhich form apart of this specification.
My invention has reference to bolt-wrenches; and it consists in the improved device here inafter described, wherein a wrench is provided that is adapted to turn or manipulate headless bolts, or bolts from which the heads have been broken or worn. V
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a boltwrench constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation.
The body of the wrench consists of an enlarged body portion, A, which is provided with a longitudinal slot, (1, the front face of said enlarged portion at either side of said slot being provided with a series of depressions, b. The said enlarged portion is provided with a handle, B, and is tapered at its other extremity to present an operating end, the face of which is milled or provided with a series of serrations, 0, to present a biting portion.
O designates a link, which is provided integrally and rigidly at one extremity with a transverse bar, (I, designed to engage a bar in the depressions b, as illustrated most clearly in Fig. 1. The other end of said link (lextends beyond the rear face of the enlarged portion A, and is pivoted in the bifurcated end of the hook D.
In operation the hook D is caused to en circle or embrace the bolt, and the bar d is so adjusted in the depressions that when the enlarged portion Ais operated by its handle to assume a position illustrated in Fig. 2its serrated end 0 will bite or grip the bolt-body and rigidly hold the same in conjunction with the hook D, and permit the device to be turned so as to revolve said bolt.
This deviceis especially useful in removing the bolts which secure the mold -boards of plows in place, as the hooked end can be placed over the mold-board so as to engage with its inner side, while the serrated end of the handle will bear upon the end of the bolt or its head, so as to prevent said head from turning while the nut is being removed, an ordinary wrench being employed for this purpose.
It will be obvious that the device is simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive, and may be put to other uses than those hereinbefore mentioned.
I am aware that heretofore it has been proposed to construct a pipe-wrench wherein the main or body portion was provided with a horizontal slot, the lower side of which was corrugated to form a series of bearings for a transverse pin located on the movablejaw. My invention, however, will be distinguished from such construction, in that I provide the body portion with an extended vertical slot,
the outer faces of the parallel sides being corrugated to form bearings for the cylindrical pin connected to the link 0. By such arrangement the strain is borne by the entire thickness of the body portion and is not weakened, as it would be where the body is centrally perforated,as disclosed by the construction disclaimed.
I claim- The combination, in abolt holder, of a body having a slot, as described, the external faces of the walls of said slot being corrugated,
the link 0, extending through said slot, a cross-bar, (1, carried by said link to bear in the depressions, and a gravity-hook, D, pivotally attached to the link, substantially as set forth. r In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PRICE JOHNSON. Witnesses:
WILLIAM L. Brsnor, RICHARD TALBOT.
