HINGE FOR BOXES OR TRUNKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,227, dated Decernber 2s, 1.886. Application filed July 26, 1886. Serial No. 209117. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHN VINCENT SNYDER, of Santa Maria, Santa Barbara county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Hinges for Boxes or Trunks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to'the class of hinges, and especially to those which are adapted for boxes and trunks; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of devices, all of which I shall hereinafter fully de lever. One end of the strip is secured at c by a fixed pivot to the body of the box or trunk, and the other is secured at c to the lid or cover. The angle of the strip projects upwardly between the box and the lid when the latter is open. 1

The operation of the hinge is as follows:

The end which joins the cover or lid being fast, the movement of said cover in closing causes the hinge to follow it, said hinge turning on its fixed pivot-connection with the body of the box or-trunk until the cover is closed.

In practice I make a slot or socket, D, for I the housing of the hinge, which said slot or socket is easily formed in the molding of the 40 box or trunk. Instead of securing the end of the hinge rigidly to the cover, which would require a tight fastening, as it is subjected to some strain, I accomplish the same result by letting the hinge into the sides of the cover 12, 5

so that they are limited in their movement and will accompany the cover.

I am aware it is not broadly new to 0011- strnct a hinge of an angular piece or strip having its ends secured to the box or trunk and cover, and such I do not claim, broadly, as my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination with a box or trunk and its lid or cover, the rigid angular piece or strip forming the hinge C, a fixed pivot-connection between one end of the piece or strip and the box or trunk, and a rigid connection between the other end of said piece or strip and the lid orcover, formed by attaching said piece or strip at c and letting it into the sides of the lid or cover at b, substantially as herein described. 6 5
