SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,971, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed January 9,1886. Renewed November 29, 1886. Serial No. 220,219. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, LEON O. DION, of N atick, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rivets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a rivet for uniting the seams connecting the Vamps with the quarters of shoes or brogans, rubbers, and other overshoes wherein great strain is brought to bear on the upper end or top portion of the side seams of the same in putting on and removing such from the feet, as heretofore and now in general use for the purpose; and my invention may be applied to a variety of uses wherein strength-is desired, leaving the riveted end or clinched portion even with the surface of the material through which the rivet is inserted, and turned over upon the same, so as to form a broad bearingsurface thereon without the aid of a separate washer.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a Fig. 2 represents a modification of the same. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 represent longitudinal sections of the constructions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 6 represents a cross section of a modification. Fig. 7 represents a rivet embodying my invention, and shown inserted through two pieces of material and turned over at the point end and headed or clinched. Fig. 8 represents an elevation ofa modification of a rivet constructed according to my invention. Fig. 9 represents a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents the body of the rivet, which in cross-section is square or rectangular, havingtwo sides formed parallel with fiat faces upon opposite sides of said body portion A,the other two sides being provided with notches B about niid-length, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, being groove provided across the point end of the rivet, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 5. It will be seen in the modification shown in Figs. 2 and 5 that the said notches or scallops B extend from the points F. to the head F, the body forming the points E so that they incline outward or stand on a slight angle to the central or axial line of the body of the rivet. A rivet thus formed, when inserted through two pieces of material, C, with its points E projecting, is more conveniently and rapidly riveted or turned over and down upon the surface of the piece of material, as shown in Fig. 7, thus securing a firm, strong, and broad bearing of the points E with the material, and leaving a smoother and better finish, especially when employed in joining the seams connecting the Vamps with the quarters in manufacturing brogan shoes, arctics, or similar apparel wherein the turned-over points of the rivets are upon the outside exposed to view.
In Figs. 8 and 9 are shown rivets having cylindrical bodies provided with notches B upon opposite sides thereof, leaving the other two sides straight and parallel, as shown. The said notches or scallops B may be formed on two or three or more sides, as shown in the cross-section views Figs. 3 and 6, and when the body of the rivet is cylindrical and notched the point end may be provided with a conical opening or cavity, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A rivet the body portion of which is provided with notches or scallops, for the purposes set forth.
2. A rivet having a square body provided with notches or scallops and its end with a V- shaped groove, so as, to form two incline points, as described. I
