F. L; CARPENTER.
GRIDDLE.
Patented Do. 2-1, 1886;
, Wz'iizwaws A $0 @M. EKJQXW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS L. CARPENTER, OF HARTLAND, VERMONT.
GRIDDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 35 4,593, dated December 21, 1886.
Application filed February 18, 1886.. Serial No IQQAM. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS L. CARPENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hart- ]and, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Griddles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,
My invention is an improvement in griddles provided with a series of plates or griddles to receive the batter and a corresponding number to receive the cakes when turned to be browned on their opposite sides; and it also consists in the novel construction and manner in which it is operated, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a top plan View of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 shows in detail the under side of the disk, which assists in securing the parts together; and Fig. 4 is the handle to be used in operatingv the mechanism.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A represents the frame or griddle.
B are the stationary griddles that form a part of the frame.
0 are the griddles that receive the batter that is to be baked.
D is the band or flange, provided with a corresponding series of notches, a, to receive the arms I) of the plates 0. These arms 12 are provided with gear-wheels c. The plates 0 are also provided with arms d, which enter the holes or bearings in the projections or uprights h, which are formed upon the frame A. The flange D has also uprights 9 cast upon its frame, provided with holes toreceive the ends of the arm I).
The frame E has an indentation, z, to receive a nut, j, on the bolt is, which assists in securing the disk F in its position upon the frame A. The disk is provided entirely around its circumference with a gear, G, to mesh with the gear-wheels c on the arm b when in position.
The disk F is secured by the bolt k, which passes through the hole Z, then into the hole m of the frame E, and an additional nut is placed upon the under side of the frame, to secure the bolt, if necessary. The disk is also provided with incline flanges struck up or 0th erwise formed to receive the handle H, to 0p erate the mechanism. The lower portion, I, of handleis inclined or beveled to adapt itself to the flanges, to give it a secure hold.
In operating my invention the griddle is placed upon the stove, and having acquired sufficient heat the batter is placed upon the plates 0 and allowed sufficient time to brown. Then the cook or operator places the handle in its required position and gives a turn to the right. The disk imparts motion to the gearwheels keyed upon the plates holding the cakes, will immediately rise and fall over upon the corresponding plates, thereby turning the cakes to be browned on the opposite sides, thus avoiding the trouble of a cake-knife and having the cakes broken.
What Iclaim, and desire to secure as Letters Patent, is
1. A griddle provided with a series of stationary plates, B, and pivoted plates 0, having gear-wheels a secured thereto and operated by the disk F, provided with flanges n,to receive the handle H, as herein shown and described.
2. A griddle constructed of a frame, A, provided with uprights g, h, and f, stationary plates B, pivoted plates 0, journaled in uprights g, h, and f, provided with arms I) and d, gear-wheels c on the inner pivots of the plates 0, and a geared plate engaging said gear-wheels, as herein shown and described.
3. A griddle consisting of a frame, A, stationary plates B, pivoted plates 0, j ournaled to said frame, provided with arms b and d, gear-wheels c on the inner side of said plates 0, in combination with the disk F, provided with the gear G, pivoted to the frame A and operated in the manner as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS L. CARPENTER.
Witnesses:
