UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NILS JOHNSON, OF SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN.
VEGETABLE- MASHE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,132 dated November 9, 1886. I
' Application filed January 12, 1886. Serial No. 188,375. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I NILS J OHNSON, of Su perior, in the county of Douglas and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Potato and Turnip Masher, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The object of. this invention is to construct a masher whereby large quantities of potatoes or turnips may be quickly and thoroughly mashed; and to this end the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying I drawings, forminga part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure I is a vertical sectional view of my improved potato-masher; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the upper hopper being shown in section.
In constructing such an apparatus as illustrated in the drawings above referred to, I
provide a stand, A, which is madeof castiron, although any other material having the requisite strength would answer my-purpose. The top of this stand A consists of a rectangular external rim, a, from the four corners of which the legs I) I) extend downward. The
top or table proper of the stand A is made. up a of a number of parallel bars,c c 0, arranged as best shown in Fig. 2. A shaft, B, is mounted beneath the rim a, being held by boxes (1 d, fixed to said rim, as indicated in Fig. 2, the shaft being mounted so as to run at right angles to the bars 0. Upon this shaft B, I secure a number of knives or S-shaped beaters, D D, which are arranged spirally upon said shaft, as shown best in Fig. 1.
Upon the end of the shaft B,I fix a pinion, E, which is engaged bya large gear-wheel, F,
which is studded to the stand A, as shown, said gear -wheel F being provided with a handle, G, in order that it may receive a rotary motion, which motion it imparts to the pinion E, and consequently to the shaft B, so that the knives or beaters" D D are carried round within the spaces between the strips 0 0. Upon the opposite end of the shaft B, I fix a balance-wheel, H, in order that a steady motion may be imparted to the shaft B, and consequently to the beater D.
Uponone side of the rim or, I form cleats or M lugs o o, beneath which I place the lower flange, a, of the upper hopper, N, the other three flanges of the hopper being held in place by thumb nuts or screws 19 p. This hopper N, I provide with a cover, M. Two other 1ugs,q (pare formed on the under side of the rim or, in position to receive one edge of the flange 'r of the lower box, P, the other flanges of said box being held in place by screws or thumbnuts s. p
In operation the vegetablesto be mashed are placed within the hopper N, which is closed by its cover M, to prevent the material from flying out of the hopper. The shaft B is then rotated and the knives or boaters D D carried successively through the material, which is thoroughly beaten and mashed by being brought between the edges of the heaters and .7 the edges of the cross-bars 0.
Such a masher as I have described is cheap, durable, and efficient, and may be used to mash large quantities of vegetables in an exceedingly short space of time.
I am aware that a rotary vegetable-cutter has been provided with a series of U-shaped fixed knives, between which spirally-arranged knives work, which knives are mounted on a shaft journaled below the fixed knives. I am .also aware that rotary cutters have been provided with spirally-arranged S-shaped knives, and 'I do not claim the same as of my invention. v
vHaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa The frame comprising a rim, a, the parallel bars 0'0, and upper and lower hooked lugs, o q, all cast in a single piece, in combination with the shaft 13, having beaters projecting up bet' ween the bars 0 0, the upper and lower hoppers, N P, having flanges a 1', which flanges on one edge engage the hooked lugs, and the thumb nuts or screws 19 s,securing the flanges at other points to the rim, substantially as set forth.
