luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuw IUMTED STATES HYRUM SPILLMAN, OF POCATELLO, IDAHO.
GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1922.
Application filed September 5, 1919. Serial No. 321,809.
To all whom t may concern."
Be it known that I, HYRUM SPILLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pocatello, in the county of Bannockand State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Grate, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to improvements in stoves and furnaces, and more particularly to the grate construction thereof.
The object of the invention is to kprovide a grate construction wherein the weight of the firebedsupported thereby is equally proportioned throughout the stationary and rotary members thereof. Y
A further object of the invention is to provide a grate wherein the firebed supporting surface of the grate bar may be changed at intervals, thereby increasing the life of the grate.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a rotary grate construction possessing equally as efficient shaking qualities as the horizontally reciprocating grates now in use, and one which will not accidentally dump the grate during. the shaking operation.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of whatis claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a top plan view of a grate and its support, constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 illustrates a side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 illustrates an end elevational view of the grate; and
Figure 4. illustrates a fragmentary section of the grate and its support.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the support for the grate, which is shown 'as preferably rectangular in form, but it is to be understood that the size and form of the frame may be varied to meet various requirements without departing from the spirit of the invention.
This supporting frame is of a size to fit within the usualvfireboX of a stove or-furnace, and includes the end members G and '7 which supportV the. bracket members 8 bolted thereto as at 9, the same being provided with central openings constituting bearings by means of which the ends of ythe shaft 11 of the grate bar is supported. The main grate includes the grate frame 12 which is constructed to support the disks 13, the disks 13 being secured to the frame by means of the securing members 15. The disks 13 aire also provided wfith central` openings to accommodate thek shaft 11 which forms a part of the grate bar. This grate bar has the disks 14 supported thereon and disposed in spaced relation throughout the length of the shaft 11, the disks 14 being shown as disposed between adjacent disks 13, the disks 14 being of diameters less than the distance between the side members of the frame 12 to permit the same to rotate freely therebetween.
The frame 12 is preferably formed of upper and lower sections 1G and 17, each section having the front and rear heads 18 and 19, the front heads 18 being provided with extensions 20 which are disposed within the central opening of the forward bracket 8.
The forward ends of the extensions 2O are provided with cut out portions 21 forming clutch faces 22 to receive the correspondingly formed clutch faces formed on the operating handle 23, said Operating handle being provided with a central opening adjacent the clutch faces which opening is squared to correspond with the squared extremity 24 of the operating shaft 11.
From the foregoing it will be seen that if it becomes necessary to move the grate bar to accomplish theshaking thereof, the operating handle 23 which is formed with a squared opening is positioned on the squared extremity 24 of the shaft 11, the handle is then given slight movements to the right and left, resulting in the partial rotary movements of the disks 14 with relation to the disks 13.
If it becomes necessary to dump the fire, the handle is positioned as before stated, and forced forwardly on the shaft until the clutch faces thereof engage the clutch faces 22 of the extension 20, locking the handle to the extension. The handle is given a complete turn with the result that the coals `the clutch faces are brought into engageV ment, whereupon a turn of the handle results in the main grate member being rotated to bring the reverse side thereof in an upper position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a grate constructiom a' supporting frame, 'a main grate member including a frame, disks supported bv the frame, a grate bar including a shaft, said shaft having a squared end, disks supportedon vthe shaft and disposed between the idisks` of the main grate member, said main grate member including heads having extensions provided with clutch faces in combination with an operating handle having a clutch face, said Operating handle having a squared opening to accommodate the squared end of the shaft to rotate the grate bar and being adapted to be moved to bring the clutch faces in mesh with the clutch faces of the main grate member to rotate the same, and bearings for supporting the grate bar.
In testimony thatl claim the foregoing as my own, vrI have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses'.
