`UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BORN, OE CLEVELAND, OHIO.
GRATE.
SPECIFICATION fOrming part of Letters Patent No. 364,209, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed January 14, 1887. Serial No. 224,Z5t59. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BORN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, haveinvented a certain new and Improved Stove or Furnace Grate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof.
My invention relates to grates which may be used in furnaces, stoves, or ranges, which will behereinafter moreparticularly described, i
and pointed out in the claims.
That my invention may be more fully nnderstood, reference will be had to the following specification and accompanying drawings, making part of the same, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the combined grate. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. l.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the bed, in which is the frame B, Fig. l, bearing or resting in the lower angular flanges, a, thereof, Fig. 3. Said frame consists of the longitudinal side pieces, b b, and the end and cross pieces c and d, by which are formed the bearings for the front and back grate, C and D. In the front part of the grate the side pieces, b b, are formed with angular projections e,con stituting part of the grate-surface. Between them is located the revolvingcylindrical grate C, which consists of the end rings, fand g, and connected by the bars z' andj with intervening spaces, describing a spiral line of barsand B, (in Fig. 2,) extending from the pivot o, is a shaft, o, provided with a ratchet, P, arranged in relation to the pawl P', pivoted to the stove at the end. To the square end of the shaft o is to be fitted a crank, (not showm) whereby the grate C can be rotatedin the proper direction for discharging the ashes and cinders.
The pawl and ratchet prevent a rotation of the grate C reversely to that indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3, so that on turning the grate C the deposits thereon are always moved back ward, owing to the helical formation of the grate-bars t' and j.
The pawl is shown in dotted lines, not for the reason of being pivoted'to the grate of the furnace or range, (not shown in the drawiugs,) but to indicate the relative location of the pawl to the ratchet-teeth. In the frame B is located the grate D, pivoted in bearings q' q, respectivel y in and between the side pieces, b b. The bar r is loosely connected to the bed `A and is provided on one end with a roller, s, by means ofwhich the grate is held up against the lug t. "Within the slot r' is a guide, r, attached to the side of the bed A, and which sustains and allows the bar to be withdrawn or moved out, causing the grate D to drop to a position shown by the dotted lines in Figi 2. 0n the inward movement of the bar r the grate D is raised up to a horizontal position.
This peculiar construction and arrangement of grates greatly facilitate the obtaining and maintaining a good tire in a furnace or range. For instance, a few turns ofthe grate C in direction of the arrow will move the tire backward and make room in front for a fresh sup ply of coals. At the same time the ashes and slack which fall through the bars into the interior of the grate C will be carried toward the ash-pit, which is directly under the grate D, and will be finally discharged into the same through the opening n. in the end of the grate C.
It will be noticed that the barsare tapering toward the inside, so as to prevent the clogging by ashes or slack between them. In this way a perfect combustion of thev coal takes place and the ,ashes which accumulate in the replace will be discharged therefrom upon the rotation of the grate at the end, and caused'to drop down into the ash-pit below by the depending movement of the grate, as shown.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hollow revolving grate having spiral bars and spaces, in combination with the ratchet and pawl, the frame B, journals o and attached thereto, substantially as and for the ro p, and the shaft o', substantially as and for the purpose described.
purpose described. In testimony whereof I affix my signa-ture in.
2.' A pivoted hollow cylindrical grate havpresence of two Witnesses.
ing,` spiral bars and spaces, and a pztwl and ratchet, in combination with a. rectangular grate provided with pivots, and bearings in which the pivots rest, and :t sliding bar in suitv able bearings, With a roller on the inner end HENRY BORN.
