PATRICK RAFFERTY, or ovm, NEW YORK.
REVOLVING GRATE BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,786, dated March i, 1887.
Application filed July 10, 188d. Serial No. 207,699. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK RAFFERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ovid, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Grates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in revolving grates for furnaces, stoves, and the like; and it consists in the novel construc tion and arrangement of the same, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fullyillustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my device, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cap-plate detached from the grate, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of one of the bars. Fig. 5 is a Vertical sectional View in detail, and Fig. 6 is a top view of portion of the grate and showing the cap or hood.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the grate-bars having end journals, a, which are journaled to the framing or support b, which may be a portion of a stove or furnace. These bars are provided with pinions c, which mesh with one another and revolve the bars when the crankhandle 01 is turned by-the operator. The bars aforesaid are designed to revolve and allow the ashes to fall below, and are constructed in the following manner: The body portion B is of circular form and projecting therefrom, and a part thereof are semicircular flanges O and teeth or lugs D, and between which flanges are spaces E, designed to receive the flanges and lugs or teeth of the adjacent bar, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be seen that the pinion on which the crank is attached imparts motion to the train of gearing, thus revolving the bars simultaneously, and the said gearing also serves to relieve the furnace of ashes, both front and rear, which may otherwise accumulate at each end of said grate.
Should it be desirable to place the front gearing on the outside of the furnace, I have provided acap-plate or shield, (shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings,) which will protect said gearing, which consists of the journal-plate (I, having thejournal-bearings d for the journals a, and projecting hood 6, which protects the gearing, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the annexed drawings.
The bars are journaled to the support by removable plates f, having bolts, as shown, whereby thegrate bar or bars may be readily removed for repair or replacing it with another; and the revolution of the bars not only relieves the furnace at its center from ashes, but clears the sides and ends thereof as well. At the same time the bars are adjusted and arranged in such relation to one another as to permit a full draft to the fire.
It will be further observed that when the bars are revolved the teeth agitate the ashes and the same are carried below, falling between the bars, and the flanges serve to prevent the coal from doing likewise by filling the space between said bars, thus permitting the ashes only to drop below.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new article of manufacture, the gratebar constructed as shown, consisting of the teeth D, semicircular flanges G, and circular body B, having end journals, a, the whole cast entire, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix mysi nature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK RAFFERTY.
