J. GHIVILL.
PIRE BUCKET.
Patented Deo. '7, 1886.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CHIVILL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO. THE WEBSTER 8D i COMSTOCK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FIRE-BUCKET.
SPECIE'ICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,733, dated December 7, 1886.
Application tiled October 1. 1886.
To (LZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN CHiviLL, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireuckets, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents my improved bucket as suspendedA when ready for use. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same. Fig. 3 shows a modification of said construction; and Fig. 4. is a detail View of a portion of a bucket, showing another modiiication.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the different iigures.
In warehouses and factories where it is customary to keep a supply of water-buckets on hand iilled with water as a precautionary measure against tire, it is found difficult, if not impossible, even with the most vigilant watchfulness, to prevent the employs from usingthe buckets for other and ordinary purposes. The
' result is that in ease of a tire the usual means relied upon for extinguishing it are wholly wanting.
It is to prevent such occurrences that l have made the invention herein described, which consists in so constructing a lire-bucket that it cannot be employed for ordinary purposes. I accomplish said object substantially in the manner herinafter more particularly described and claimed.
A in the drawings represents an ordinary water bucket or pail, preferably constructed from galvanized sheet-iron or other metal, and provided with the usual bail, a, by which it may be normally suspended from a hook, b, attached to a beam or other suitable support, as is usual in factories and other buildings.
Serial No. 215,056. (No model.)
Rigidly attached to the body of said pail, at or near the bottom, by means of rivets o, I preferably provide a single supplemental bail or handle, C, extending diametrically across said pail, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, though two hails, crossing each other, as shown in Fig. 4, may be employed, if preferred, without varying the essential features of my invention.
Fig. 3 shows another modification of the above-described construction, which consists of a single depending handle or stud, C, provided with'a iiange, c', which is riveted or otherwise attached to the bottom of the pail.
Vhen either form of device shown is attached to an ordinary pail, it is obvious that the same could not be used for ordinary purposes, for the reason that it would tip over and spill the contents. On the other hand, when used to extinguish a fire, the secondary handle or bail may be grasp ed for throwing the water, thereby serving a double purpose.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A pail provided with the usual bail at its top, and a rigid handle attached to and projecting from the bottom thereof, to prevent the pail being stood upon said bottom, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pail provided With the usual bail at its top, in combination with one or more rigid hoops or bows bent across andprojecting from the bottom thereof, substantially in the manner and for the purposes specified.
JOHN CHIVILL.
