Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MYRON H. DISBROVV, OF ROCHESTER, NEV YORK.
BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.353,352, dated November 30,1886.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may conccn:
Be it known that l, MYRON H. DrsBR'ow, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Berry or Fruit Baskets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, sueh as will enable others skilled in t-he art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
The object ot' my invention is to supplya demand for berry-baskets of greater capacit-y than those now generally made, that will intcrchangeably tit crates made for the present standard sizes.
To this end, and in order that each basket may be conveniently handled and carried, my invention consists in the combination, with an oblong basket ot' an exact multiple in length and capacity ot' a4 standard fruit-basket, of two wire hails or handles corresponding in form and dimensions with the contour of the end portions ot' the baskets, pivotally connected with the sides of said basket about one-third of its lengthapart, for stcadinessin carrying, and so that they may be folded or turned down and rest on the rim orredge of the basket and not occupy any appreciable space.
In the drawing, the gure is a perspective, showing my improved berry-basket.
A is the body of an oblong basket, lnade of the same depth and width but just double the length and capacity of an ordinary standardmeasure basket. Such basket without a handle is awkward in use. If provided with a rigid handle, it will not pack closely, and a single pivoted hail will not secure steadiness in handling. I therefore combine with such basket two hails or handles, B B, by pivotally connecting them with the sides of said basket at points about one-third of its length apart, as shown. These bails or bows are made of the same shape and ,dimensions as the edge or rim of the ends ofthe basket and fold or turn down and rest thereon when packed in crates.
I am aware that it is not new to attach two bails or handles which swing past the edge to lunch or other similar baskets, and such I do not claim; but
W'hat I do claim, and desire to secure by lLetters Patent, is-
A berry-basket consist-ing of the combination, with au oblong body or receptacle, of two'wire bails or handles corresponding in form and dimensions with the contour ot' the end portions of the basket, pivotally connected with the sides of said basket aboutonethird of its length apart, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MYRON H. DISBROW.
