'UNETED STATES JOSEPH BERG, F DULUTH, MINNESOTA GOLLAPsIBLEREGErTAGIJE Application filed May 10,
This invention relates to improvements in i.
quently may fold inwardly and'thu's collapse I the basket or pail to such'anf'extent that the top and bottom rings almost touch;
collapsible baskets, pails, or the like, and has special reference to a collapsible pail or hasket particularly adapted for use by tourists,
campers, or the like, and which may be 'carried in a mmimum of space, which forms, the I principal object of the invention.
Another object is to provide such a collapsible article which will function in every respect similar to the ordinary non-collapsible one. V
Other objects and advantages of the inventionrwill appear in the following description thereof. v Referring now to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts: i 1
Figure 1 is'a side elevation of the device frame and showing the flexible element thereof in section.
Figure 2 is a section of the manner in which the frame members are hingedly united.
The device in its broadest sense comprises a foldable wire frame structure having disposed therewithin a fluid holding or waterproofed fabric pail or bucket and which of course is foldable within and with the frame. The frame structure comprises a pair of wire hoops 1 and 2, forming the top and bottom of the device, a locking hoop or ring 3 and the hingedly united spacing members 4. The spacing members 4 are of V and inverted-V shape, the apex of one being wound about the apex of the other and the free ends being wound about the top and bottom rings; so that they are, broadly speaking, hingedly united .to each other and to the spaced rings. The upper V-shaped portion of each spacing member is attached to the top ring 1 by the free ends of .said portion being coiled one turn about the ring as at 5 and so that they may swing thereon. The apex of the upper portion is coiled twice about the apex of the lower portion, as at 6, and the axis of this coiled portion 6 is transverse the axis of the rings 1 and 2; the free ends of'the lower portion being coiled one turn about the bottom ring 2. Thus the two portions of the spacing membersare pivotally united and conse- To; hold ;the device in its uppermost rigid b position I have provided the locking ring 3- which is slidable longitudinally between the free ends of the upper portions, and of course when this ring is down adjacent the coiled: portions 6'the spacing members cannot moveand a very rigid frame structure results. To insure that this locking ring stays down against the coiled portions 6, the wire forming the upper V-shaped portions is bentlinwardly as at 7 forming a hump over whicli'the; '05
ring 3must be forced before final locking position.
The bail or handle 8. of the device is at-' tached to the top ring 1 by means of thefree ends of a U-shaped piece of wire 11 beingit assumes its coiled about the ring 1 and within which the v,
hooked ends of the handle may be removably placed.
Of course across the bottom there extends two or'three diametrically disposed wiresf'lnl they being in the same plane with the bottom ring 2 and form the. bottom of the basket.
The device thus far described may admirably be used for a shopping basket or the carrying of large or bulky articles,
However should it become desired to use the device as a water pailthere is provided the round canvas water-'proofed bag indicated at 9, it being of a size to just fit within the wire frame structure,but the top of which" is designed to fold over the top of said strucj ture as indicated at 10. In applying the bag the handle is removed,the bag inserted, the wires 11 extending up through apair of slots in the bag suitably placed, and the handle then applied;the handle thus actingto hold the bag securely in position. v From the foregoing it is apparent that I have described a very practical and eficient collapsible basketor pail and one that may be used for all ordinary purposes. V Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
p 1. A collapsible device of the class de scribed including spaced Wire rings, wire 7 spacing members pivotally attached to the rings and also to each other and having kinked portions therein, a slidably operable locking ring for holding the spacing rings rigid by passing said kinked portions, and a bag removably positioned Within said device;
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPH BERG.
