Abstract

1,163,367. Adjustable door closer. M. K. KOIVUSALO. 10 Nov., 1967 [11 Nov., 1966], No. 51175/67. Heading E2M. A door closer, adapted to be accommodated in recesses in doors and/or door frames and comprising a tubular housing 6 containing a closer spring 15 which acts through a cylinder 4 moving on a stationary piston 5 of a hydraulic or pneumatic damping arrangement to close the door at a regulated speed, is characterized in that the piston is secured to an axial piston rod 2 and inside the tubular housing there is a rotatable element (end piece 3 and sleeve 11) with a screw-thread connection to the piston rod, the said rotatable element being accessible from the exterior of the housing (via holes 10) so that it can be rotated for adjusting the position of the piston rod and piston in the axial direction. The piston red may be prevented from rotating by means of socket 1. (For Figure see next column)

ACTION MECHANISM FOR DOOR CLOSER Filed Nov. 7, 1967 United States Patent Ofice 3,531,820 Patented Oct. 6, 1970 3,531,820 ACTION MECHANISM FOR DOOR CLOSER Mauno Kalevi Koivusalo, Yliopistonkatu 24C, Turku, Finland Filed Nov. 7, 1967, Ser. No. 681,248 Claims priority, application Finland, Nov. 11, 1966, 2,986/ 66 Int. Cl. Ef 3/10 US. CI. 16-52 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A door closing device has a tubular piece recessed into a door or door frame. Inside the tubular piece there is a rotary tube connected to the rod of a brake piston. When the tube is rotated the position of the brake piston is changed in the direction of its rod.
The present invention has reference to a door closer action mechanism for such door closers which are countersunk either into the door or the door frame or which are countersuck both into the door and the door frame. Such devices usually include one or several tubular pieces which essentially produce the action required in a door closer and which are countersunk in the door and/or door frame. Inside the tubular piece there is a spring which comes under compression when the door is opened and causes the door to close, and a device retarding the closing of the door, usually consisting of a retarding device composed of a hydraulic or pneumatic piston and cylinder in interaction with each other.
The deficiencies of devices of this kind belonging to previous art include the fact that it has not been possible to adjust them afterwards or that at least for afteradjustment, it has been necessary to dismount the door closer device from the door. Likewise, servicing of the door closer has been diflicult.
The aim of the present invention is, among other things, to achieve improvement in respect of the abovementioned drawbacks.
With the aid of the invention, eg the advantage is gained that the strength of the door action may be adjusted at any time during service. If, for instance an outside door is concerned, the force of the doors return may be increased during windy weather. In wintertime, when the greases and oils become more viscous, it is likewise indicated to make an adjustment. The invention also considerably facilitates the servicing work because it enables all the moving parts of the door closer to be detached as one unit and the servicing itself to be done in any conditions desired.
The invention is described in greater detail in the following with reference to the attached drawing and to one of the inventions embodiments, which is illustrated by the drawing.
The door closer action mechanism according to the invention includes a tubular piece 6 fixed to the loop of the door hinge and carrying within it, rotatably, another tube 11, along which the cylinder 4 moves. Within this pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 4 there is a piston 5, the rod 2 of which is attached by screw attachment to the body 3, which in its turn has been fixed to one end of the tube 11. To the other end of the piston rod 2 a nut 8 has been fixed by soldering, which is free to move in the direction of the piston rod in a socket 1, which resembles a socket wrench and is fixed to the tubular piece 6. The tube 11 is held in place by a retaining ring 7, for which a groove has been provided in the hinge loop. The hinge-loop side end of the tube 11 has small holes 10, by which the tube 11 may be rotated, using an appropriate spanner. The reference number 9 indicates a widening at the other end of the cylinder, by means of which the door is made to close with a jerk at the final phase of closing. 1
The position of the piston 5 with regard to the cylinder 4 can be adjusted by rotating the tube 11. When the tube 11 is rotated, the piece 3 also rotates along with it. Since rotation of the piston rod 2 has been prevented by means of the nut 8 and socket 1, it follows that owing to the screw attachment of the piston rod 2 and the piece 3 the piston 5 will be displaced in the direction of the piston rod 2. As it is easy to see from the drawing, position adjustment of the piston 5 is rapidly and simply performable. Servicing of the mechanism is likewise easily accomplished because it is only necessary to remove the retaining ring 7 and all the moving parts of the device can be pulled out from the tubular piece 6.
In practice, the various details of the device may eve appreciably deviate from the embodiment presented in the drawing, without transcending the coverage of the invention, which is defined in greater detail in the claims. For instance, rotation of the piston rod 2 may also be prevented by an arrangement other than that involving the socket 1 and nut 8. It is merely essential that rotation is prevented so that the piston rod 2 may move in its longitudinal direction all the same. Likewise, some other element may be replaced for the tube 11, by which the piece 3 or its equivalent part may be influenced.
I claim:
1. Action mechanism for a door closer, comprising a tubular piece for recessing into a door or door frame, a rotary member within said tubular piece, a brake piston within said rotary member, a piston rod connected with said piston, and a screw attachement connecting said rotary member with said piston rod, whereby rotation of said rotary member causes a movement of said piston.
2. Action mechanism in accordance with claim 1, comprising means connecting said tubular piece with said piston rod to prevent rotation of said piston and to permit its axial movement.
3. Action mechanism in accordance with claim 2,
wherein said means comprise a nut fixed to one end of References Cited UNITED STATES PATENTS 9/1908 Flynn "16-61 3/1912 Flynn 16-61 BOBBY R. GAY, Primary Examiner
