I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN FORNEY DRAPER, OF PATOKA, ILLINOIS.
BEDSTEAD.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,125, dated November 23:, 1886.
Application filed July 12, 1886. Serial No. 207,801. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I JOHN FORNEY DRAPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Patoka, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the-following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a top view of a bedstead provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a 1ongitudinal vertical sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line a: 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to bedsteads; and I it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a device with which the sides and ends of the bedstead may be so braced and drawn together that they may not v spread, allowing the slats to drop out, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the side rails of the bedstead, and B B are the end pieces. Two longitudinal re-enforcing strips, 0 C, are secured to the i nner sides of the flanges D'upon the side rails, upon which the slats rest, at the middles of the said flanges, and two pairs of blocks, E E, are secured upon each flange and re-enforcing cleat, forming a space between them, within which a perforation, F, is formed in the flange. Two cross'pieces, G G, have their stepped ends H resting between the blocks, the said ends having downwardly-projecting pins I fitting in the perforations in the flanges, and the outer sides of these cross-pieces are provided at their middles each with an eye, J, projecting outward. The hooked inner ends of two rods, K K, are hooked into each of these eyes, and the outer hooked and diverging ends of these rods are secured in hooks or eyes L L upon the end pieces of the bedstead, the said hooks or eyes being preferably secured to the inner corners of the posts. The cross-pieces are provided with perforations M M, through which pass headed and screw-threaded bolts or rods N N,-
bed-frame will be prevented from spreading,
preventing the slats from dropping out, and if the frame should spread sufficiently to allow a slat to drop, the longitudinal nutted rods and the diverging rods will prevent the slat from dropping upon the floor, but will support it upon them.
In devices of this kind heretofore used the draw of the tightening-nuts has not been in a direct line with the length of the bed, but has been indirect after first drawing on the side rails. Consequently the draw upon the posts, where the most is needed, has been only limited, while in my improvement the 'draw is entirely upon the posts, and the side rails are held in place by means of the pins in the ends of the cross-pieces.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with a bedstead the side rails of which are provided with longitudinal strips, each of said strips having a hole near each end, of two pairs of blocks secured to each of said strips and to the side rails, a pair of cross-pieces having a pin at each end secured to said side rails between said pairs of blocks, a pair of brace-rods secured to the middle portion of each of said cross-pieces,
and to the posts of the bed at that end, and a pair of adjusting rods or bolts connecting said cross-pieces.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two. witnesses.
JOHN FORNEY DRAPER.
