CAP.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,453, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed Si pteniber 27, 1886. Serial No. 214,617. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC H. DINNER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hats or Caps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to protect from cold that 'part of the forehead which is just under or back of the visor of the cap or hat when the latter is on the head.
WVhile susceptible'of more general application the invention has, however, been devised more particularly with reference to its use with driving-caps, with a view to prevent the feeling of cold whichone exposed to the low temperature of a northern winter experiences at the point where the band of the cap joins the visor, and which in driving is intensified by the necessity of pulling the cap tightly down upon the head.
To this end I provideat the front of the cap.
' or hat a covering or protecting strip which projects below the body or ordinary band of the cap, back of or under the visor, so as to cover the forehead at that point. This strip can be made of any suitable shape, and may be either permanently attached to the cap, or can be made detachable therefrom, and it may, if desired, be made movable, so that it can slide up into the body or crown of the cap when it is not in use.
The nature of my improvemcutwill be readil y understood by reference to the acco nipanying drawings, in which--- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drivingcap embodying my invention, with the visor represented in dotted lines, so as to disclose more fully the covering-strip. Fig. 2 isa ver tical central section from front to rear of the A is the body of the cap, and B is the visor. These parts are of any suitable or preferred construction or make.
The covering or protecting strip, in which my invention is comprised, is represented at O. This stripis made of any suitable material,
preferably, however, of cloth, thickened by points where the visor terminates, projecting below the band or body of the cap, gradually increasing in depth toward the center of the cap in front, and being shaped so that it will fit that portion of the forehead which is just below the ordinary band and back of or under the viso By this simple means the forehead is kept warm, and the painful effect which otherwise would be experienced of the cold air which strikes up under the visor is entirely prevented.
I am aware that hats and caps have been provided with IROOIDZLSIIS. I am also aware that caps have been provided not only with ear and neck protectors, but also with a protector to pull down over the visor. I claim none of these things.
Having described my improvement, what I claim herein as new and of my own invention As a new article of manufacture, a' hat or cap provided with a forehead-protecting strip projecting below the band or body of the cap immediately back of or under the visor, as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of September, 1886.
ISAAC H. DINNER.
