A. E. BAILEY.
POR-TABLE WA'RMING APPARATUS. N0 352,386. Patented Nov. 9, 188.6.
PATENT rrrcn..
ANNA E. BAILEY, or onroAeminnrNois.
` PORTABLE WARMING AFPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,386, datedv November 9, 1886,
Application filed December 15, 1885. Serial No. 185,702. (No model.) V
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ANNA E. BAILEY, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Portable Warming Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear,'and exact description, that will-enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to a warming device that is more especially intended for the use of persons employed on street and grip cars; the object being to provide a portable device that is so constructed as to be adapted for use by persons who, from the nature of their employment, are compelled to perform their duties in a standing and exposed position.
Figure l is a back view in perspective of a device. embodying my improved features; Fig. 2, a vertical section; Fig. 3, a broken front View; hTig. 4, a horizontal section in the plane 4, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a broken away sectional detail.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a body or Water-reservoir of a semicircular shape, open at the back, and consisting of the vertical part a and the horizontal part a. This body is formed of double walls a2 a3,with sufficient space between the same to provide the continuous water compartment or space B, as shown in Fig'. 2. The chambered base C is provided for the recept-ion of the heating-lamp tti. bis a removable false bottom, which will be ordinarily composed of soapstone, baked clay, or other suitable material adapted to temper the heat.
D is a vent or escape tube, which will prevent the water from becoming too hot or a pressure forming in the hot-water' compartment. The apparatus is charged by removing the plug b', while the handles d d provide means for lifting or carrying the device.
In using the warming apparatus the person will step in at the open side and stand on the bottom b, the overcoat extending down outside of the upper partgof the device and allowing the heat generated to ascend with a gentle radiation and diffuse itself throughout the clothing, thus keeping the body of the person using it warm as well as the feet. This arrangement also fully protects the feet and lower part of the limbs from the draft which comes up through the gripslot in the bottom of the car.
The gripcars usedl on cable roads are usually open all around, and the driver is necessarily exposed to the severity of the weather, and is required to remain in a standing position, and cannot move around in the least for exercise, thus being compelled to suffer agreat deal from the cold.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a warming apparatus, the combination, with the senlicircular body A, open at the back and consisting of the vertical part a and the horizontal part a, constructed double so as to provide a water-space between, substantially as and for the purpose Set forth.
2. ln a portable warming apparatus consisting of a semicircular body having double Walls to form a water-receptacle, a chambered base, a heating device inserted in said base, and an escape or vent tube, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
ANNA E. BAILEY.
