SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,764, dated April 13, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, IlIIOHAEL W. HANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Foot-Warmers, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a foot-rest embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section thereof.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts.

The purpose of my invention is to make a foot-rest which will be especially adapted for use in barbers shops, although it may be employed with advantage elsewhere. My aim is to provide means whereby the feet may be kept comfortably warm during the operation of shaving, and, as a minor feature of my invention, I have made provision for having the water resulting from the melting of snow upon boots or shoes drained off or away from the rest, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described.

A represents a foot-rest, such as is commonly employed in barber-shops, and a is the central shelf or rest commonly found therein, excepting that, as a feature of my invention, I make this shelf or rest of metal.

B is a chamber or compartment immediately below the rest or shelf a, and b b are perforations or small openings in the rear wall or side of this chamber. 0 is a door in the same wall.

D is a kerosene or spirit lamp set within the chamber B.

I employ the door 0 for the purpose of admitting this lamp or heater, being arranged in and removed from the chamber B with facility, and the perforations are intended for the purpose of admitting air into the chamber 13 to supply the lamp with oxygen or outer air for sustaining combustion.

It will be perceived that the shelf a forms the top or roof of the lamp or heater.

E isa groove or channel sunken into the front part of the shelf a. This shelf, as shown, is inclined, the groove or channel E being in the upper side or face thereof and near its lower edge. The advantages of this construction are that a customer coming into the shop in cold weather to be shaved, and placing his feet upon the rest a, in the usual manner, will find that the heat radiated from the shelf a will keep his feet comfortably warm, and that if there should be snow upon his boots or shoes the water resulting from the melting of the snow will be drained away through the channel E. A receptacle may be arranged to receive this drainage.

Foot-rests of this class are very frequently upholstered, and the provision made for draining away the water resulting from melting snow-upon the boots or shoes of the customer will thus prevent the rest from injury from that source.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A barbers foot-rest, A, having a central metallic shelf, a, the said shelf having its lower edge toward the front of the rest, and having in its upper side, at or near its lower or front edge, a groove or channel, E, the said shelf also having below it a heating-chamber, B, the whole constituting a new article of manufacture. substantially as and for the purposes specified.
