A PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL ROBINSON, OF LA GRANDE, OREGON.
FOOT-WAR M ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of, Letters Patent No. 271,364, dated January 30, 1883 7 Application filed October 7, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOEL ROBINSON, of La Grande, in the county of Union and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Foot-Warmer, of which the following is a full clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new andimproved warmingdevice for vehicles,
upon which warming device the feet are to be IO placed to keep them warm.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying i drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional elevation of my improved foot-warmer on line mm, Fig. 2. Fig.
2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line y 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cotton-holder of the lamp.
The box A is formed with a back and front of sheet-iron, and sides A of perforated metal 2 plates or of wire-netting. The front is provided with a vertically-sliding door, B; but it can be provided with a hinged door or any other suitable or like device. The box A is secured on a base-board, ,O, and the top and back of the box A and the top of. the baseboard 0 are covered by a sheet of copper, D, which is riveted to the back of the box A and to the top of the base-board. The box Aand the base-board O are so fixed on the bottom of the vehicle that the occupant of the vehicle can place his feet on the base-board O and against the back of the box A, in which box A, I place a lamp, which is provided with a chimney, E, made of sheet metal and extend- 0 ing almost to the top of the box. The burner closed at the top and open at the bottom. The
inner cylindrical vessel, F is provided at its bottom with a series of cross-bars, H, which hold a quantity of cotton or other fibrous mal terial, J, in the vessel F The cotton or other fibrousmaterial, J, prevents the oil from being thrown about in the lamp by the jolting of out in case'that the lamp is upset, and thus prevents explosions and danger from fire. The hot gases issuing from the top of the chimney E heat the top and back of the box A, and also heat the copper plate D, the radiating air for combustion passes into the box A through the apertures ot' the side plates, and the heated air also escapes through the said and thus assists in keeping the legs and feet of theoccupantwarm. I use a metal chimney, E, as the same is very strong and durable, cannot be broken, and only serves to conduct the heated gases upward, and forms a draft for the flame. A glass chimney would be useless, as the lamp is not used to illuminate, but only to heat.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a foot-warmer, the combination, with the box A, provided with perforated sides, of the base-board O, and the sheet of copper attached to the top and back of the box A and to the top of the base-board O, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a footwarmer for vehicles and sleighs, the combination, withthe box A, provided with perforated sides, and the baseboard 0,
said board being covered by a sheet of copper, of the lamp having an outer vessel, F, closed at the bottom, and an inner vessel F open at the bottom and closed at the top, the latter vessel, F havingcross-bars H near its bottom, and cotton filling J, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
, JOEL ROBINSON.
