UNITED STATES V PATENT OFFICE.
DEWITT VAN EVERA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STOVE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,963, dated August 18, 1891.
Application filed June 17, 1 8 90.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DEWITT VAN EVERA, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the fol- Y lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to attachments for supporting shelves and other heating or warmin g appliances upon stoves; and the invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal cross-section of a cylinder-stove with myimproved attachments applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an inner side view of the door-frame of a stove with my improved supporting attachment applied thereto, the latter being shown in section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the plate being removed. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4 4: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing certain modifications of my invention. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a similar View on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a transverse vertical section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is a view of my attachments applied to a complete stove, the latter being partly broken away to better illustrate the attachment of my device thereto.
The objects of my invention are to provide an attachment by means of which various objects or articles shall be conveniently sup ported within a cylinder or similar stove, so as to be entirely concealed thereby and effectively warmed, heated, or cooked therein, as desired. These objects I accomplish by virtue of the construction which I will now proceed to describe.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body or barrel of a cylinder-stove, and B designates the door-frame casting of the same, said casting being usually attach ed at an open- Serial No. 355.720. (N0 model.)
ing in the front of the casing about midway between the base and the top of the stove.
C designates the door, which is hinged in the usual manner, as indicated at c, or otherwise suitably attached to the door-casting B. The inner sides of the casting B or stovebody are formed or provided with lugs D I) arranged in pairs one above the other, at op posite sides of the door-opening or stove-body as is best shown in Fig. 2. An inwardly-pro jecting flange 0r rib E extends entirely or partly around the inner face of the door-castin g B for a purpose to be presently explained.
F F designate two horizontal arms or supports, the out-er ends of which are each provided with a vertical enlargement f, the lower end of which forms a short pintle f which enters the corresponding lug D, and the upper end of which forms a longer pintle f which enters the corresponding lug D. The arms F F thus extend horizontally into the body of the stove above the fire chamber or grate, and each being formed on its inner side with a longitudinal horizontal flange or rib f The inner ends of these arms F are preferably curved toward each other, as shown at G G, and are connected together either by a horizontal transverse bolt g, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or by a vertical pin g, which passes also into an L-shaped lug H, securd to the rear inner surface of the body or casing A, as shown in Figs. 5 and 8. It will thus be seen that the arms F are removably secured in horizontal position within the stove-body and directly above the fire pot or grate. In some instances the arms F may extend independently entirely across the stove.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 4 I designates a flat elongated plate (eithersolid or perforated) of such marginal contour as to fit upon the flanges f 3 of the arms F. This plate is designed to receive fiat-irons or other articles to be heated cooked, or warmed within the stove, and is preferably provided on its under side near its margins with pendent flanges i, as best shown in Fig. 2, to which flanges, if desired, a pendent oven may be secured.
In Figs. 5, 6, and 7 I show a rectangularchamber or oven J, supported by its base, removably upon the arms F. The outer end of this oven is preferably open, and an external flange j surrounds the exterior of the oven adjacent to its outer end, and by contact with the flange E retains the heat therein and prevents the entrance of gases and other products into the receptacle, and also prevents the escape of gas from the stove, the stove-door C serving to both close the stove and the oven. The arms F are preferably provided near their outer ends with slots h for receiving a lifter, by means of which the arms F are removed. It will thus be seen that Ihave provided a supporting attachment which is entirely concealed within the stove and which does not at all interfere with the introduction of coal into the stove or the combustion thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved attachment for stoves, consisting of a pair of supporting-arms connected together at their inner ends and arranged to be removably connected at their outer ends to the interior of a stove, substantially as described.
2. An improved attachment for stoves, consisting of a pair of supporting-arms having pintles formed upon their outer ends and provided with longitudinal flanges on their inner sides, the said pintles being arranged to engage sockets on the inner side of a closed stove so as to project the arms within the stove above the fire-pot thereof, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in
the county of Milwaukee and State of \Viscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
