DEVICE FOR APPLYING HEAT TO THE BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,261, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed February 24, 1888. Serial No. 265,221. (ModeL) T 0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEXTER M. SMALL, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a Device for Applying Heat to any Part of. the Body by means of Hot \Vater, of which the follow ing is a specification.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, is a side view of the device, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the part B, which is made of two plates, preferably of metal, having a space between them for the water to circulate through, as indicated by the arrows, with inlet and outlet tubes C and D.
A is the heater, to be placed over a lamp or oil-stove, consisting of the enlarged base and enlarged top I, connected by the contracted intervening neck J, and having two tubes, one above the other, the water as heated passing out. through the upper one by a wellknown principle, and back through the lower one, being connected with the part B by the flexible tubes E and F. When filling the heater with water, the part B should be suspended therefrom by these tubes, so the air can freely escape as the water enters, the water passing down through the aperture Gand tube 0 and the air up through the tube D and aperture 11 at the same time. Then once filled up to the dotted line just above the aperture G, the part 13 should then be placed higher than the heater, so, the water will commence to circulate as soon as heat is applied, there being no danger of the water overflowing the heater, as the part B is air-tight.
The heater is represented with only one set of tubes, consisting of one upper (outlet) and one lower (inlet). tube, which is sufficient to illustrate my invention, though I can make them with three sets, so that different appliances can be used at the same time when necessary for different parts of the body. The different appliances are of different shapes; but each has an inlet and outlet tube properly arranged for the purpose set forth, and are all adapted to the use of steam as well as hot water, the only difference required in the apparatus being in the construction of the boiler.
The object of the special construction of heater above described is to secure a large heating-surface with the smallest possible capacity consistent with a suflicient distance between the upper and lower tubes (which project from the sides thereof) to insure a proper circulation of the water between it and the appliance, it being obvious that the less water used with the same heating-surface the less time willbe required to heat it, which is often a matter of great importance.
I claim as my invention 1. A device for making continuous warm or hot applications to the body, which consists of a receptacle for heating water, a hollow airtight appliance suitable for contact with the person, and flexible tubes E and F, connectin g the appliance and receptacle, all 0011* structed and combined so as to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The heater constructed with an enlarged top and base separated by a contracted intervening neck, and having one or more sets of tubes extending out from the sides thereof, for the purpose specified, each set consisting of two tubes, one above the other, substantially as described.
