' WEYBURN COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,383, dated November 9, 1886.
' Application filed July 3, 1886. Serial No. 207,097.
To aZZ whom it 71mg concern:
Be it known that 1, LEWIS A. WEYBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the teeth employed in barrows. Its object is to divide'and pulverize the soil. l
It consists in the construction represented in the accompanying drawings, to be hereinafter described, and in which Figure l is an isometrical representation of a tooth embodying myinvention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on dotted line a on Fig. 1.
The barrow-tooth represented in the accompanying drawings is provided with a shank, 1, to engage a beam of the harrow to fix it in place. This shank l in this instance is of taper form and-cylindrical in transverse section, and its end portion is screw-threaded and provided with a screwnut, '2, to clamp and hold itin place in the beam. The tooth3 depends from its cylindrical shank portion, and is curved rearward substantially in the segment of a circle, and its extreme rear ng portion, 4, is twisted to nearly a horizontal position and is on y ed dowgward. The vertical and rearwardcurving portion 3 of the tooth, between its shank and its rear end-twisted portions,is produced in knife-edge form on its forward convex edge, 5, as shown in section in Fig. 2.
My improved harrow-tooth is designed for use inharrows of the usual construction, and instead of the taper cylindrical shank 1 employed to connect it to the beam, any other known form of attachment capable of use in connection with my improved tooth may be employed. 4
(No model.)
The use of my improved tooth: In the forward movement of the harrow the knife-edge of the tooth will readily divide the earth, and its twisted rearend will lift and pulverize the ground.
I am aware that previous to my invention it has been proposed to providea harrow-tooth one end of. which was a threaded shank, to secure said tooth to a beam, the remaining portion of the tooth curving downward and rear: wardly, at which end the upper and lower corners were bent laterally to a slight extent to form a deflecting portion. I am also aware that it has been proposed to provide a harrow-tooth having its front portion bent horizontally to furnish a fastening portion, the remainder of said tooth depending rearwardly, and having its extremity bent or twisted laterally to a slight extent. In the first construction the ends of the tooth deflect the earth to one side, and in the other case thetwisted portion lies below the effective portion of the cutting-edge. In my improved construction the curved cutting-edge approximates a semicircle, so that the rear twisted portion lies in ahigher plane,
thus insuring the cutting portion entering deep
