- DE WANE B. SMITH.
HARROW.
No. 449,649. Patented Mar. 31, 1891.
DE WANE B. SMITH, OF DEERFIELD k PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES II. POOLE,
OF ONEIDA, NEW YORK, AND THESNATIONAL HARROV COMPANY,'OF
NEW YORK.
HARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ratent 110.449,649, dated March 31, 1891,.
Application filed J annary 30, 18 9Q. Serial No. 338,668. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, DE VANE B. SMITH, of Deerfield, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved harrow, and has for its object the production of a simple and effective device, which at a minimum cost of manufacture is particularly strong, efficient, durable', and pleasing in appearance; and to this end my invention consists, essentially, in frame -bars intersecting one another, spring barrow-teeth secured to the barrow-bars, a downward bend or loop formed in the tooth beneath the plane of the barrow-bars, forming a' runner therefor, with the metal of the tooth bent forwardly and upwardly from said loop or downwardbend and in front of the intersecting point of the barrow-bars, whereby the clogging of the harrow-f rame is absolutely prevented, and a leveling-bar beneath and supported by the forward harrow-bar for leveling the material to be harrowed and preventing diving or irregular movement of the harrow.
The invention also consists in the detail construction and arrangement of the parts, all as hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l represents a perspective of my improved harrow, illustrating the general arrangement land construction of the parts. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the harrow, taken in a line at right angles to one of the front barrow-bars. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view, illustrating a harrow-tooth as secured to its supporting-bar, and illustrating the leveling-bar in position; and Fig. 4 represents a perspective of an auxiliary tooth and the clip for securing the same to the upper curve of the spring-tooth.
`bars a, arranged at an angle to the line of draft, and cross-bars b, intersecting the draftbars a and suitably secured thereto. These -bars of and b are composed of suitable material, and, as illustrated, one of said bars, as b, is formed with a groove or recess a', into l. which the other bar is fitted for the purpose of i locking the two together by the shoulders of i said groove and necessitating the use of but one securing-bolt c. l The teeth D are attached to the harrow- `bars at d, and.- are provided with a bend or loop d', formed by bending the metal of the `tooth rearwardly and downwardly and then forwardly. The tooth is then bent forwardly and upwardly toa point a suitable distance above the plane of the barrow-frame, and the `free extremity thereof is then bent back' wardly and downwardly, forming a yielding digging-point d3.
By reference to the drawings, particularly Figs. l and 2, it will be noticed that the forward upward bend cl2 of the tooth is substantially in front of the intersecting point of the bars a and b, thus preventing material from catching in the angle formed by said bars and clogging the harrow, since the said bend forces the material beneath the harrow by the runner-shaped lower bend d', whence it passes rearwardly from the harrow without the slightest liability of clogging. This is a feature of great advantage, since frequently the ground to be harrowed contains quack and other materials which prevent the operation of harrows as ordinarily constructed; but experience has demonstrated that with my improved construction ground of this character can be harrowed or cultivated with as much ease and in as thorough a manner as ordinary clean ground.
Secured at the upper bend of the harrowtooth by a clip D is a smoothing or auxiliary tooth D2, which is described and claimed in a preceding application and forms no part of my present invention, although particularly applicable upon a frame of this character.
The attaching end d of the barrow-tooth may be secured to either side of either of the The harrow-frame A is composed of draftbarrow-bars, but as illustrated and preferably constructed the said end is disposed in substantially a horizontal plane and fitted or recessed in a groove' or recess provided in the lower side of the harrow-bars, and is secured in operative position by the bolt c, which secures together the barrow-bars.
In order to further' prevent the harrowframe from clogging and facilitate its successful and efficient Operation, I provide a leveling-barE, supported in a plane below that of the harrow-frame, and preferably beneath the forward harrow-bars.
In my preceding application, Serial N o. 328,971, I have illustrated a barrow-frame of a different construction provided with a like leveling-bar, but in the aforesaid application the leveling-bar is supported directly upon the lower bend of the teeth secured to the harrow-frame bar superimposed above said leveling-bar, while in this construction I prefer to use a brace or connection e, interposed between and connected to the front harrowbar and the leveling-bar E. It will be understood that with this construction all strain is removed from the teeth and they are free to yield to obstructions, whereas in the former construction they were somewhat hampered by the leveling-bar.
It will be readily understood that in operation the leveling-bar smooths off the ground to be harrowed and aords a bearing for the harrow, which prevents it from diving and irregular movement. By the use of this leveling-bar I am enabled to use a higher frame than ordinary, and thus, in connection with `sesses features of great advantage. however, limit myself to the-exact form and the runner-shaped bend d2 and d', absolutely prevent the clogging of the barrow.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing, and it is evident that this construction of harrow pos- I do not,
construction of the parts of my liarrow, since it will be understood that they may be varied from that described Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hereindescrbed harrow, the same bcing composed of intersecting fra1ne-bars secured together, a leveling-bar rigidly connected to said frame-bars with a space between the two, and `spring barrow-teeth secured to said frame-bars and having a downwardly-extending bendor loop extending beneath the frame-hars for forming a runner, and a yieldingdigging-point below the plano of said levelingbar, substantially as described.
In testinionywhereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Deerfield, in the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, this 21st day of Jan'uary,l890.
